Early Life
John Metchie was born in Taipei, Taiwan, on July 18, 2000. His full name is John Metchie III and holds Canadian nationality. Education and College Career
He moved to the United States and attended St. James School in Hagerstown, Maryland. He spent a year after graduation at the Peddie School in Hightstown, New Jersey, before committing to play college football at the University of Alabama.
During his freshman year at Alabama, he played in all 13 games in 2019 and had four catches for 23 yards. In his sophomore year in 2020, he became one of Alabama’s top three receivers, racking up 916 yards on 55 receptions and six touchdowns. He was the first receiver to earn the Jon Cornish Trophy as the best Canadian in NCAA football in 2020.
Moreover, he collected 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns as a junior in 2021 before breaking his ACL in the SEC Championship Game. In addition, he was selected as the recipient of the Jon Cornish Trophy, joining Nathan Rourke as the only two-time winner.
Professional Career
After his successful college career, John Metchie went to the 2022 NFL Draft. In the 2020 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Houston Texans in the second round (44th overall).
He was also chosen by the BC Lions in the seventh round (59th overall) of the 2022 CFL Draft before signing a four-year, $8 million contract with the Texans on May 14, 2022. Moreover, he stated in July that he would sit out his first season after being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukaemia.

Metchie received permission to join training camp one year after getting his diagnosis. He made his NFL debut in Week 2 against the Indianapolis Colts, when he caught his first pass from rookie quarterback C. J. Stroud for 17 yards. He concluded the season with 16 receptions and 158 yards.
