Early Life

John Lloyd Cruz was born in Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines, on the 24th of June 1983. Currently, he is 40 years old and he comes under the birth sign of Cancer. His full name is John Lloyd Espidol Cruz and he holds Filipino nationality. He belongs to the Filipino and Southeast Asian ethnicity.

John Lloyd Cruz has worked as a contract artist for ABS-CBN since his showbiz debut in 1996. He co-starred with Kaye Abad in the teen drama “Tabing Ilog,” which aired for nearly four years beginning in 1999. In 2002, he played Yuri in “Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay” with Bea Alonzo, which was his breakthrough role. He later appeared in “It Might Be You” and “Ikaw ang Lahat sa Akin.”

He appeared in the highly successful soap opera “Maging Sino Ka Man” (2006) alongside Bea Alonzo, Anne Curtis, and Sam Milby. In early 2007, he started endorsing Unilab’s Paracetamol (Biogesic). In 2009, he collaborated with Bea Alonzo to play the male protagonist Armando in  “I ♥ Betty La Fea,” a Philippine translation of the Colombian soap ‘Yo Soy Betty La Fea.’

Cruz starred alongside Angel Locsin in the critically praised dark fantasy series “Imortal,” which is a sequel to the original serial ‘Lobo.’ He made recurring appearances as a TV host on “ASAP,” the longest-running Sunday noontime variety show. Moreover, he was also recruited as one of four Kanto Boys members, along with ASAP regulars Vhong Navarro, Billy Crawford, and Luis Manzano.

He joined Toni Gonzaga’s Saturday sitcom series “Home Sweetie Home” in 2014, where he portrayed Romeo till his departure in 2017. Additionally, he took an indefinite leave of absence from the entertainment industry following a contentious relationship with model and actress Ellen Adarna, his Home Sweetie Home co-star. He has appeared in commercials on occasion since 2019.

Cruz made his film debut with the 2008 film “A Very Special Love” along with actress Sarah Geronimo. The film earned PHP 179,569,117 at the box office. His follow-up film with Geronimo, “You Changed My Life,” a sequel to ‘A Very Special Love’ produced by Star Cinema and Viva Films, hit at the box office in February 2009. The film’s overall theatrical earnings hit PHP 240.44 million, making it the highest-grossing Filipino film of all time in the same year.

He played Luis Manzano’s lover in the film “In My Life.” Moreover, he has been dubbed the “Box Office King” for three years in a row: in 2007 for “One More Chance,” in 2008 for “A Very Special Love,” and in 2009 for “You Changed My Life,” which became his career’s highest-grossing film until around six years later.

He again worked with Bea Alonzo in the 2010 film “Miss You Like Crazy” which was a box office hit earning more than PHP 140 million in its seven-week run. He was again teamed with Toni Gonzaga in another box-office hit, “My Amnesia Girl,” which grossed $12.8 million on its opening day (November 2010) and over $100 million in its first week. It grossed PHP 165 million during its one-month run and was the highest-grossing film of 2010.

Other Movie Projects

He again starred with Alonzo in the 2012 film “The Mistress” which earned a total box-office gross of P260,000,000 and became the third highest-grossing Filipino film of all time. Moreover, he then reunites with Geronimo for “It Takes a Man and a Woman,” the third and final sequel to the films ‘A Very Special Love’ and ‘You Changed My Life,’ which was released in 2013.

In 2015, he starred in and produced the thriller film “Honor Thy Father.” Cruz and Alonzo reprised their roles in “A Second Chance,” a sequel to the 2007 hit ‘One More Chance.’ The film was released on November 25, 2015, and grossed PHP 550 million, making it the highest-grossing Filipino film of 2015 and all time.

Some of his recent movie works are “A Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery” (2016), “The Woman Who Left” (2016), ” Finally Found Someone” (2017), “Culion” (2019), and “Historya ni Ha” (2021).

Throughout his successful career, he has won several awards and recognitions. He received the FAMAS Award for Best Actor for ‘Miss You Like Crazy’ (2010). Similarly, he received the FAMAS Award for Best Supporting Actor in ‘Dubai’ (2005). Similarly, Cruz received the FAP Award for Best Actor for ‘The Mistress’ (2012) and ‘All About Love’ (2006).
