Early Life

After graduating from Albright, he earned a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard University.

Professional Career

Mayor of Braddock

Initially, John Fetterman began his career as a social worker, working with at-risk youth in Braddock, Pennsylvania, a small steel town near Pittsburgh. In 2005, he was elected as the mayor of Braddock and served in that position until 2019. During his time as mayor, he gained national attention for his efforts to revitalize Braddock and improve the lives of its residents. He focused on economic development, housing, and education, and worked to attract new businesses to the town.

In 2016, he ran for the United States Senate as a Democrat but was unsuccessful in his bid for the nomination. In 2018, he ran for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania and was elected as the running mate of Governor Tom Wolf.

In the general election, he defeated Republican candidate Mehmet Oz with 51% of the vote, becoming the first Democrat to win this seat since 1962. He won the Democratic nomination with 59% of the vote. Moreover, he was sworn into the Senate on January 3, 2023, he resigned from his position as lieutenant governor.

He has represented Pennsylvania as a junior senator since 2023. Generally regarded as progressive and populist, he supports the right to healthcare, criminal justice reform, the abolition of the death penalty, a $15/hour federal minimum wage, and the legalization of marijuana.
