He then moved on to become the defensive coordinator for the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

In 1996, he became the head coach at the University of Delaware, where he led the team to two conference championships and the national championship game in 2003. In 2008, he joined the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League as head coach and president, leading the team to the championship game in its inaugural season. He then served as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the Coastal Carolina University football team in 2011 and 2012.
