Early Life and Childhood
Jim Wiley was born Thomas James Wiley on April 28, 1950, in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. He was 71 years old at the time of his death. Playing Career
After having a successful collegiate career at Lake Superior State University, Wiley joined the Pittsburgh Penguins as a free agent in 1972, becoming the first Lakers alum to play in the National Hockey League. He played for the Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the majority of the following two seasons, but he did play in 26 games for the Penguins during that time, contributing four assists.
In the 1974 NHL Intra-League Draft, the Vancouver Canucks selected Wiley, but he remained working as a minor professional. He received a two-game call-up in 1975–76, and his longest NHL stint came in 1976–77 when he played 34 games for the Canucks and recorded four goals and ten points. He stopped playing in the NHL in 1980 and retired. In 62 NHL games, Wiley made an appearance. He scored four goals, had ten assists, and had eight penalty minutes for a total of 14 points.
Coaching Career
Jim Wiley entered the coaching field after retiring. Before making his professional debut in 1993 as the head coach of the Kansas City Blades, the top affiliate of the San Jose Sharks, he spent many years as the coach of the Des Moines Buccaneers of the United States Hockey League. Wiley was promoted to head coaching with the NHL team after the Sharks fired head coach Kevin Constantine following a disastrous 3-18-4 start.
Additionally, Wiley’s 17-37-3 record was an improvement over their beginning, but it was insufficient for him to keep his job. He returned to the Sharks’ top farm team after the season, the Kentucky Thoroughbreds, where he worked until 1998. Wiley made stops in the East Coast Hockey League, Central Hockey League, and United Hockey League after leaving the Sharks organization.
