Early Life

Jill Scott came to the world on the 4th of April, 1972, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in the United States of America. She is 51 years old as of 2023 and her birth name is Jill Heather Scott.

Scott holds an American nationality and belongs to the African-American ethnicity. Her birth sign of Aries, and she has her belief in Christianity by religion. She grew up in a North Philadelphia neighborhood and was raised by her mother, Joyce Scott, and grandmother.

Her first desire was to be a high school English teacher. However, after three years of study and then working as a teacher’s aide, she became disillusioned with a teaching career, and she dropped out of college.

Afterward, she started performing career as a spoken word artist at live poetry readings during her early career.

During a Roots live show, Jill Scott debuted as an artist singing as original artist/singer of “You Got Me.” Soon after, she inked to Steve McKeever’s ‘Hidden Beach Recordings label as its first artist.

On the 18th of July 2000, her debut album, “Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1” was released. She gained much recognition for the album and its hit singles, “A Long Walk”, and “Cross My Mind.”

Her live album, “Experience: Jill Scott 826+” was released on the 20th of November 2001. It was followed by the release of her second full-length album, “Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2” on August 31, 2004.

She was featured on the George Benson and Al Jarreau collaboration single “God Bless The Child” in the year 2007. Moreover, she was also prominently featured on hip hop artist Lupe Fiasco’s single “Daydreaming”, which won a 2008 Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance.

On the 25th of September 2007, her third studio album titled “The Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3” was released.

Other albums and singles

Her second live album “Live in Paris+”, was released on the 7th of February 2008, and consists of eight songs that were released. Onward,  she was sued by Hidden Beach Records for leaving halfway through her six-album contract and also claimed that she owed million-dollar damages in the year 2010.

“The Original Jill Scott from the Vault, Vol. 1.” a compilation album of Scott was released on the 30th of August 2011. Following that, she took a four-year break, and her fourth studio album titled “The Light of the Sun” was released. The album’s single “So in Love” debuted at number 43 on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Additionally, she signed a multi-tour deal with Live Nation to expand her concert touring. Her fifth album, “Woman” was released on the 24th of July 2015 and is the first album she has released on Atlantic Records.

This album debuted at the number one position on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. Scoot and Erykah Badu came together for the first livestream battle between women on the 9th of May 2020.

It was a live stream for three hours, and the two friends live-streamed their hits as well as songs they had written for other artists. The battle was viewed by over 700,000 viewers including Michelle Obama, Spike Lee, Quincy Jones, and Janet Jackson.

As an actress

She debuts as an actress in the 2007 feature film, “Hounddog” portraying the role of Big Mama. The next year, she portrayed the role of  Precious Ramotswe in Anthony Minghella’s film adaption of Alexander McCall Smith’s series of books “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” (2008).

Similarly, she lent her voice to the character Storm of the X-Men on the BET series Black Panther. In the crime drama series “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” Scott guest-starred in an episode.

Additionally, she reprised the role of Sheila in the 2010 comedy-drama film “Why Did I Get Married Too?” She appeared in the  Lifetime movie “Sins of the Mother” as Nona, an alcoholic mother confronted by her estranged daughter whom she neglected.

In May 2012, she appeared in the television music series “VH1 Storytellers.” Similarly, she appeared in “The Human Kind”, the eighth episode of the fifth season of Fringe. In the CW’s “Black Lightning ” she played a recurring role as villain Lady Eve.

Moreover, she appeared in the 2019  First Wives Club, a TV adaptation of the 1996 comedy about three divorced wives who share a common past.
