Jeremy Scott

Jeremy Scott is a fashion designer and creative fashion director from the United States. Jeremy Scott has owned his self-titled label since 1997 and has served as the creative director for the famous fashion house Moschino. He has worked with popular Hollywood celebrities such as Kanye West, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Madonna, Nicki Minaj, and many more.

Early Life

Jeremy Scott was born on the 8th of August 1975, in Kansas City, Missouri, United States. He is currently 48 years old as of 2024, he has a zodiac sign of Leo. In addition, he follows the Christian religion and holds US citizenship. Further, he belongs to White-Caucasian ethnicity.

The names of his parents are Jim Scott and Sandy Scott. His father is a Civil Engineer and his mother is a teacher by profession. He has two older siblings, a sister Barbara Scott, and a brother James Scott.

Passionated toward fashion from his early age and Education

He started to study French and took night courses in Japanese when he was just 14 years old. Because he was determined to become a fashion designer.  At the time of his high school year, he used to sketch fashion designs in his notebooks. Unfortunately, his unique dressing style often made him the target of bullying.

Despite this, his passion for fashion continued to grow, and he found inspiration in the pages of Details magazine, where he looked up to fashion icons such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Martin Margiela, Thierry Mugler, and Franco Moschino.

To fulfill his dreams, he moved to New York in 1992 to study fashion design at one of the most prestigious Art and Design colleges in the city, Pratt Institute. Meanwhile, he did an internship at the New York offices of Aeffe, the parent company of Moschino which helped him to gain valuable industry experience.

Professional Career

To pursue a career in the fashion industry, Jeremy Scott moved to Paris in 1996 in search of a job. He was unable to find a job and was forced to scavenge for food and even sleep in the Metro.

His fortunes changed when he met a Jean Paul Gaultier PR who was impressed by his distinctive hairstyle, which he had been cutting himself since he was five years old. Scott was employed to promote parties at a nightclub as a result of this experience.

Launched his brand

He couldn’t get a fashion job despite his best efforts. Then, he decided to start his brand, and in 1997, the Jeremy Scott brand made its debut in a bar near Bastille with a collection inspired by the J.G. Ballard book and David Cronenberg film “Crash”, using paper hospital gowns and scraps of fabric from a flea market.

Meanwhile, his third collection, which was all in white, was a major critical success, earning awards and attracting the attention of influential industry figures such as Mario Testino and Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele. Devon Aoki, who was only 13 at the time, made her maiden runway appearance in the white show.

The Icelandic singer-songwriter, Björk was an early adopter, wearing an angel dress from the white show for her Homogenic world tour. Scott presented his “Duty-Free Glamour” collection in 1998, which included flight attendant-inspired ensembles and khaki coats with logos, and received accolades from critics such as Cathy Horyn. Karl Lagerfeld even stated that Scott was the only fashion designer who could take over Chanel if he left.

Relocated to Los Angeles

Scott left Paris in 2001 and relocated to Los Angeles, which was not yet regarded as a fashion capital. He was known for his cult label which had gained him a lot of fans, particularly in Asia. He has collaborated with several well-known companies, such as Longchamp, Adidas, and Swatch.

However, his collaboration with Adidas was particularly famous, as he had created iconic footwear designs, such as the JS Wings and JS Bears. Aside from fashion design, he has also worked in fragrance. In 2015, he launched his first fragrance for Adidas.

Scott’s design was even featured in the 2016 film “Suicide Squad”, with the character Harley Quinn wearing high-top heels from his 2014 Adidas collaboration. In October 2013, he became Moschino’s creative director which drawn to the label’s irreverent approach and its founder’s belief that fashion could be a form of protest. In 2014, his first Moschino collection was shown in the fall.

He reinvented Franco Moschino’s fashion jokes through an American viewpoint, making items such as McDonald’s handbags and nutrition-label ballgowns. His take on American consumer culture is often humorous, as evidenced by a purse resembling a box of Marlboro Reds with the warning “Fashion Kills.”

Departed from Moschino

He is recognized for revitalizing the Moschino brand, increasing sales, and turning it into a fan favorite. His career at Moschino was not without criticism, despite his success. Moreover, he was sued for copyright infringement in 2015 for the Fall/Winter 2015 apparel line, which comprised “literal copies” of the plaintiff’s work. The case was resolved out of court.

He announced his departure from the post of Creative Director of Moschino in March 2023, leaving behind a legacy of irreverent and delightful fashion that served to reshape the company. Additionally, he has collaborated with several celebrities, including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, and Nicki Minaj.

He has also frequently cooperated with Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, and CL, called “the Jezza posse.” Moreover, he has designed costumes for music videos, live events, and even the Super Bowl halftime show, in addition to his work in fashion. He has been compared to Andy Warhol, and his work has been shown in shows focusing on the issue of vulgarity.

In 2000, he won the ANDAM Fashion Award and the Womenswear Designer of the Year award at the Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards in 2015. He received the Venus de la Mode award for Best New Designer in 1998 and 1999 for his second and third collections and was nominated by the Council of Fashion Designers of America for Best Young Designer in 1999.

Scott was a prominent Guest Designer at Florence’s renowned bi-annual menswear expo, Pitti Uomo. The Brooklyn Museum’s “The Rise of Sneaker Culture” display included his Adidas sneakers. On the 20th anniversary of his debut, he consented to conduct a retrospective of his clothes at the Dallas Contemporary Museum in 2017.

Scott was prosecuted by Adidas in 2012 to halt the sale and distribution of the JS Roundhouse Mids. He criticized them for imitating shackles and for stealing their merchandise. But he disputed it, claiming that he was inspired by My Pet Monster, a toy for children.

Furthermore, he stated in an interview that he is comfortable with people making mistakes in understanding the designer’s ideology. Scott was also accused of ripping off the design of Santa Cruz Skateboards in 2013. This occurrence halts his design of the conflict product.
