Early Life and Childhood

Career and Professional Life

Jeffrey Toobin started freelancing for The New Republic while he was a law student. And, after passing the bar exam, he was able to work as a law clerk to U.S. circuit judge J. Edward Lumbard of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Then, he went on to serve as an associate counsel for Independent Counsel Lawrence Walsh during the Iran–-Contra affair and Oliver North’s criminal trial. He later moved to serve as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn.

He also wrote a book, “Opening Arguments: A Young Lawyer’s First Case: United States v. Oliver North” in the year 1991. The book was based on his work in the Office of Independent Counsel, which caused some controversy.

However, Walsh objected because Toobin went on to reveal information that was supposed to be kept private. He had to go to court to defend his right to publish, and the judge ruled in his favour.

After working as a lawyer, he began working as a writer in 1993 at The New Yorker and in 1996 became a television legal analyst for ABC. He covered high-profile cases such as O.J. Simpson’s trial and the investigation of President Bill Clinton.

He even went on to write books on these cases, which were later adapted for television. In the year 2000, he was able to receive an Emmy Award for his coverage of the Elián González custody saga. He was able to join CNN in the year 2002 as a legal analyst. Then, a year later, he secured the first interview with Martha Stewart about the insider trading charges against her.

Likewise, Jeffrey has authored a total of seven books. The book, “The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court” in 2007, received awards from Columbia University and Harvard University.

The names of some of his other books are “The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court”, “American Heiress”, “True Crimes and Misdemeanors: The Investigation of Donald Trump”, etc. Also, two of his books were adapted for television.

Zoom Incident

Jeffrey Toobin was suspended from The New Yorker after he masturbated on camera during a Zoom video call between New Yorker and WNYC radio staffers. It was during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic on October 19, 2020.

However, he contended the incident was unintentional. CNN did grant him some time off to deal with the situation. Later on, Toobin apologized for his mistake.

Unfortunately, he was fired from The New Yorker after an internal investigation. Also, New York Public Radio banned him from their broadcasts. It was a controversial as well as embarrassing situation for him.

However, later on, he was able to return to CNN as its chief legal analyst in June 2021 and acknowledged that his behaviour was deeply moronic and indefensible. And, now he has been working on improving himself and focusing on his upcoming book.

Jeffrey Toobin tied the knot with Amy Bennett McIntosh in the year 1986. They met each other when in college while they worked at The Harvard Crimson.

His wife is a 1980 Harvard graduate who holds an MBA degree from Harvard Business School. She also has held executive positions at Verizon Communications and Zagat Survey. The couple has children together and their names are Ellen Toobin and Adam Toobin.

Toobin also had a longtime off-and-on extramarital affair with attorney Casey Greenfield. During this time, Casey became pregnant with his child. He offered her money to have an abortion but she refused. After the child was born, he initially resisted acknowledging the boy but later a Manhattan family court judge ordered Toobin to pay child support.
