Initially, James Bettcher began his coaching career in 2004 as special teams coordinator & defensive line coach for Saint Francis (IN). During Bettcher’s tenure at St. Francis, the Cougars made three playoff appearances, including two national title games.
He was a three-time NAIA All-America Scholar, a three-time Mid-States Football Association Scholar, a two-time NAIA Coaches’ All-America selection, and a two-time Don Hansen’s All-America selection during his career as an understudy competitor at St. Francis.
After working as a graduate assistant for Bowling Green, he went on to work for North Carolina, Ball State, and New Hampshire.
Started Coaching for the NFL team
Bettcher was hired by the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League after coaching at several colleges. When Bruce Arians was the Colts’ interim head coach, he coached under him. Later, he moved to Arizona when Arians was hired as head coach by the Cardinals. He was promoted to replace defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who left to become head coach of the New York Jets.

During his tenure as defensive coordinator, the Cardinals never finished lower than seventh in the league in overall defense. After head coach Bruce Arians retired, Bettcher was seen as the most likely successor, even bringing in a coaching staff that included Mike McCoy as offensive coordinator and Chuck Pagano as defensive coordinator. Instead, the Cardinals hired former Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
Bettcher was hired as the New York Giants defensive coordinator on January 23, 2018, by head coach Pat Shurmur. New Giants head coach Joe Judge did not retain Betcher for the 2020 season, instead hiring Patrick Graham. He was hired as a defensive assistant by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. defense that finished third in the league in total yards allowed (310.0 per game) and seventh in rushing yards allowed (103.5).
