Moreover, he spent seven years in the Vienna DC Timberwolves’ youth program. In 2013-14, he was a member of the Arkadia Traiskirchen Lions of the Austrian Bundesliga.
College Career
The basketball player competed in the 2013 FIBA Europe U-18 Championship while still in high school. He drew the attention of University of Utah officials while performing well at that event. As a result, he was allowed to further his education and college career in the United States. In 2014, he enrolled at the University of Utah after getting a scholarship from the university.
He formed a strong bond with the coaching staff during his first year, which resulted in more playing time for him. In turn, the coaches, particularly one of the head coaches, Larry Krystkowiak, took him seriously and groomed him well. In his first year, he started the majority of the games and had impressive stats. During his first-season debut, he had 18 points and 10 rebounds.
He averaged 9.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in 34 games as a freshman. In his second NCAA season, he averaged 17.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. To achieve these impressive numbers, he played 36 matches this season. Additionally, he was named Pac-12 Player of the Year and All-Pac-12 First Team for his efforts. Following the second season, he decided to forego his junior and senior seasons and enter the 2016 NBA Draft.
Professional Career
Toronto Raptors
The NBA team, the Toronto Raptors selected Jakob Poeltl on June 23, 2016, with the ninth overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. As a result, he became the first ever Austrian to be drafted into the NBA. On July 9, 2016, he signed his rookie scaled contract with the team.
Later, on October 26, 2016, he made his NBA debut for the Raptors against the Detroit Pistons. His rookie season stats, however, were not as impressive as expected. In his first NBA season, he appeared in 54 games and averaged 3.1 points and 3.1 rebounds. He also played in the NBA D League for the Raptors’ affiliate club, Raptors 905.

On October 21, 2017, he set a career-high with 14 points in a 128-94 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers. On December 1st, he made all eight of his field goal attempts and scored a career-high 18 points in a 120-115 win over the Indiana Pacers. Moreover, he finished the 2017-18 regular season by hitting 34 of his final 39 shots in the final eight games. He was also the only Raptor to play in all 82 regular-season games.
San Antonio Spurs
Poeltl was traded to the San Antonio Spurs. In his first season for the Spurs in their season opener on October 17, 2018, he recorded four points, four rebounds and two assists in eight minutes in a 112–108 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
On 25th February 2022, he posted a career-high 28 points along with 11 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 blocks in a 157-153 win against the Washington Wizards. On 24th November 2020, the San Antonio Spurs announced that they had re-signed Poeltl.
In a 106-99 win over the Chicago Bulls on March 17, 2021, he recorded his second consecutive double-double with 20 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. On November 22, 2022, he set a career-high with 31 points in a 117-110 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.
Return to Toronto Raptors
On February 9, 2023, he was traded back to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Khem Birch, a 2024 first-round pick, a 2023 second-round pick, and a 2025 second-round pick. He scored 30 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and blocked six shots against the Orlando Magic on February 14th. He re-signed with the Raptors on a multi-year contract on July 6, 2023.
