Early life

Irene was born in Louisville, Kentucky. She was born on December 20, 1898. Aries was her zodiac sign. She was born to her father who was a steamboat inspector named Joseph John Dunn and her mother a music teacher named Adelaide Henry.

As a sibling, she had a brother and when her father died in 1909 together they moved to their grandparents’ home in Madison, Indiana. Moreover, from her mother, Irene received her initial piano lessons and also learned singing and acting with her encouragement. By singing with the choir at the ‘Christ Episcopal Church’ she earned money for the family.

Education

She studied in St. Louis, Missouri, at the ‘Loretta Academy and in 1916 graduated from ‘Madison High School.’ At the ‘Indianapolis Conservatory of Music,’ she spent the next two years, and with a diploma in teaching, she graduated from there.
She auditioned for the ‘New York Metropolitan Opera Company’ in 1920 after completing one year at this college but was rejected as she was too young for the job. Moreover, she continued her studies at the ‘Chicago Music College’ for another year.

In 1921 after getting the attention of touring theatre companies Irene Dunne became a professional stage singer and auditioned for them. Similarly, she added an ‘e’ to the end of her last name ‘Dunn’ around this time.
In 1922 in the supporting role of ‘Tessie’ she made her Broadway debut in the theatre production, ‘The Clinging Vine’. In the light opera at Atlanta, Georgian in 1923 she acted for the full season. She went in ‘The Clinging Vine’ on a tour of the country as the lead role in the following year. However, for some more time, She continued with her stage career mainly in the female lead roles.
In 1929 for the role of Magnolia she was selected by Florenz Ziegfeld in the Chicago production of Broadway success ‘Show Boat’ which was produced by Kern and Hammerstein. Additionally, she was immensely successful in portraying the character and was spotted by the Hollywood talent scouts.
After that, she was offered a contract with RKO Studios in Hollywood. In 1930 his first role in a film was in ‘Leathernecking’ which was a film version of the musical comedy ‘Present Arms’ staged in 1928 on Broadway. Sadly, neither the film nor her role could create any impression on the audience.

In 1929  she acted in the film ‘Cimarron’ which was the most expensive production of RKO. Later, she received her first Academy nomination for ‘Best Actress’ for her role in the film.
Additionally, in 1932, she started acting in emotional tearjerkers which were liked especially by women audiences such as ‘Back Street’, ‘No Other Woman’ and ‘Ann Vickers’ in 1933 and ‘Magnificent Obsession’ in 1935. ’ In 1935 with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire she also acted in musicals like ‘Roberta.
In 1936 in the musical film version of ‘Show Boat’ directed by James Whale she re-enacted the role of Magnolia which was a classic film. Likewise, in 1936 for her lead role in ‘Theodora Goes Wild’ Irene won her second Academy Award nomination for ‘Best Actress’ which showed her natural talent for doing comedy roles. Moreover, in 1937 to act in ‘The Awful Truth’ she teamed up with Cary Grant for which she won her third Academy Award nomination for ‘Best Actress’.
Moreover, in 1944, she acted in the films Together Again’ and ‘A Guy named Joe  ‘Over 21’ in 1945, ‘Anna and The King of Siam’ in 1946, and a wonderful comedy in 1947 ‘Life with Father. She won her fifth and last Oscar nomination for ‘Best Actress’ for her role in the film ‘I Remember Mama’ in 1948. In 1950 in the film ‘The Mudlark’ she gave a vivid portrayal of Queen Victoria and in the same year also acted in ‘Never a Dull Moment’.
