Hwangbo is a prominent South Korean singer, rapper, and actress. Hwangbo is known for her 2007 album “Lady In Black.” In addition, she rose to prominence as a member of the girl group Chakra, with whom she performed from 2000 to 2006.

Early life

Born Hwangbo Hye-jeong, better known as Hwangbo was born on the 16th of August 1980, in Seoul, South Korea. Currently, she is 44 years old and has a birth sign of Leo. She holds South Korean nationality and belongs to Asian ethnicity.

She was born to her father Hwang Bo-seong and her mother Bae Yun-hee. Meanwhile, she grew up with her brother whose name is unknown. Additionally, very little information is available regarding her early childhood life.

Moreover, she began as a vocalist and rapper before becoming the group’s leader. Additionally, she suffered from depression after Chakra was dissolved in 2006 due to financial difficulties.

At the same time, her popularity as a singer grew in Asia. The same year, she released the digital single Gift for Him. Her song “Get Hot” (“뜨거워 져”) pushed her to stardom in Europe, making her the first Korean to do so.

In South Korea, she released an extended play mini-album EP “R2song” on August 18, 2009, which included her previous hits. The song “R2song” was released for the first time in the United Kingdom on August 7, 2009, and reached No. 1 on the main European charts.

Acting

Hwangbo appeared on the Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) reality show “We Got Married” in May 2008, where she was paired with SS501 leader Kim Hyun Joong. Joong and Hwangbo left the show on December 14 due to scheduling conflicts.

She was the host of several television shows, including Nodaji, Finding Delicious, and Human Mentor. Moreover, she appeared in the first season of “Infinity Girls,” a female version of Infinite Challenge that aired on MBC Every 1.

In 2011, she appeared in the Seoul Broadcasting System comedy “Oh My God,” playing the role of a charismatic wife and attracting a large audience.

In 2012, she appeared in the Maeil Broadcasting Network drama “Can Love Become Money,” where she played a leading role and received positive feedback.  Similarly, she appeared in the third season of “Infinity Girls” before leaving the entertainment industry.

Entrepreneur and returned to acting

On March 21, 2014, she opened the personal clothing store BO! GO! and a private “muah puntual” coffee shop in Seoul’s Mapo neighborhood. After a three-year hiatus, she returned to the entertainment industry. She continues to work as a model, appearing at the Seoul Fashion Week.

She has been a recurring guest on various shows such as the “Knowing Bros.” since 2017. In “Secret Unnies,” she collaborated with Nam Bo-ra in August 2018.

Hwangbo has won a couple of awards throughout her professional career. In 2008, she won the Korean Entertainment Arts Award and MBC Entertainment Award. The next year, she earned the Korea Culture and Entertainment Award.
