Support for U.S. national anthem kneeling protests

When she was awarded the gold medal for the hammer throw during the award ceremony at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru, this athlete raised her fist at the end of the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner.

She did this in protest against injustice in America and a president who’s making it worse. Her protests led the U.S. Olympics as well as the Paralympic Committee to issue new guidelines.

These guidelines allowed peaceful expressions of protest in support of racial and social justice for all human beings.

Following her action at the 2019 Pan American Games, the International Olympic Committee reprimanded this athlete.

As a result, they placed her on probation for 12 months. Also, they prohibited Berry from any form of protest for a year.

This action at the 2019 Pan American Games cost Berry sponsorships as well as an estimated loss of $50,000.

Moreover, in June 2021, this athlete turned away from the U.S. flag when The Star-Spangled Banner was being played. This happened during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics’ U.S. Olympic track and field trials.

As per a spokesperson for USA Track and Field, the national anthem is played every day according to a previously published schedule.

However, on that day, the anthem was scheduled to be played at 5:20 p.m. but was played only at 5:25 p.m.

Regarding this incident, Berry claims that an official told her the anthem would play before she arrived on the podium. The athlete also accused critics of her protest of favoring patriotism over basic morality.

For her continued activism in bringing awareness to and educating others on issues of social justice, Team Toyota named Berry their 2020 Humanitarian Award recipient.
