Gulnur Tumbat is a Turkish-American athlete, professor, amateur mountain climber, and ultramarathon runner from Turkey. Since 2005, Gulnur Tumbat has been serving as a professor in the Marketing Faculty at San Franciso State University.

Early Life

Gulnur Tumbat was born in Denizli, Turkey, in the year 1975. She holds a dual nationality of Turkish and American and is currently 49 years old. Currently, she lives in San Francisco, California.

She was the youngest child of her parents and had two elder sisters whose names are unknown. Similarly, her father is a teacher and her mother is a seamstress by profession. Moreover, she has not disclosed the identities of her parents.

Moving forward to her academics, she went to the Middle East Technical University in Ankara where she earned a degree in Environmental Engineering. Likewise, she earned a master’s degree in Business Administration from Bilkent University and obtained a Ph.D. degree in Marketing.

Professional Career

At 17, Gulnur Tumbat started mountain climbing in the Mountaineering & Winter Sports Club of the METU. She has climbed over 30 high-elevation mountains in Turkey, Russia, Georgia, Nepal, Argentina, and the United States to date.

In 2004, she travelled to Nepal for the first time to hike and collect data for my PhD research on risk marketing and risk consumption. Only twelve women worldwide have climbed the “Eight Summits” to date. She aims to be the first Turk and Turkish woman to conquer the “Eight Summits.”

She submitted Mount McKinley (6,194 m), Aconcagua (6,959 m), Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), Elbrus (5,642 m), and Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 m).

She attempted to climb Mount Everest in April 2014 but was unsuccessful since the ascent to the summit was officially halted due to a huge avalanche. On May 21, 2018, she made another attempt and became the first Turkish woman to climb Mount Everest from Nepal’s side.

In December 2023, she accomplished the seventh of the seven summits by climbing Mount Vinson, Antarctica’s highest mountain.

Nasuh Mahruki is the first Turkish seven summits, having climbed Mount Kosciuszko (2,228 m) in Australia rather than Carstensz Pyramid (4,884 m), Oceania’s highest its highest mountain.

Apart from mountain climbing

She has completed triathlons such as the Marin County Triathlon and the Alcatraz Triathlon. Moreover, she has also participated in other adventure events, such as Gold Rush 30-hour Adventure Racing and ultramarathon competitions in California.

Similarly, she has been serving as a professor in the Marketing Faculty at San Francisco State University since 2005. Similarly, she also taught at the University of Utah, American University-Beirut, Universite de Nice-Sophia Antipolis-France, University of Innsbruck-Austria, and more.
