The incident
On Monday 20th February 2023, Gloria Serge was walking her dog along a pond behind her house in the Spanish Lakes Fairways community at 14313 Aguila Ave. An alligator slowly approaches Serge. The alligator jumps out of the water and tries to attack her dog as she is walking away with her dog. Meanwhile, she was able to save her dog, but she fell victim to the alligator attack.

Carole Thomas, a neighbor of Gloria Serge, witnessed the incident and called the police right away. Serge was dragged away inside the lake, according to Carole, who called 911; after a while of not being seen, her body suddenly appeared on the surface of the water. Carole said that she tried to save Serge with a pole, but it was too late.
After the incident, the alligator was euthanized
The alligator that attacked Serge was around 11 feet long. Alligator trapper Robert Lilly was sent to the location as soon as authorities informed him about the incident, but his efforts to bring the animal to the surface were unsuccessful. Eventually, the authorities captured the alligator, and it was euthanized. The animal was assisted into the back of a pickup truck by wildlife officials who were also present at the scene.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee (FWC), alligator incidents are not frequent in Florida, and public safety has always been a top priority for them. After that incident, they also launched a Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP) to respond to complaints related to alligator attacks.
