Gino Vannelli is a famed rock singer and songwriter from Canada. Gino Vannelli is known for his singles including “I Just Wanna Stop” (1978), “Living Inside Myself” (1981), and “Wild Horses” (1987).

Early Life

On the 16th of June 1952, Gino Vannelli was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Currently, he is 71 years old and has a birth sign of Gemini. He holds a Canadian nationality while he belongs to the Canadian-Italian ethnicity.

He was born to his parents, Joseph Russ Vannelli and Delia Vannelli. Professionally, his father was an aspiring singer and sang with the Montreal dance bands of trumpeters Bix Belair and Maynard Ferguson. But later quit singing and took over the family barbershop business. Gino grew up with his two brothers; Joe Vannelli and Ross Vannelli.

Moving on to his academics, he went to a local school in Montreal. Later, he studied music theory at McGill University in Montreal.

Professional Career

In 1972, Gino Vannelli and his brother Joe moved to Los Angeles. The two brothers waited for hours in the parking lot outside A&M Studios, desperate and broke, hoping to get a record deal. When Herb Alpert, co-owner of A&M Records, emerged, Vannelli ran toward him and handed him a demo tape while being chased by security guards.

In the summer of 1973, Alpert signed Vannelli and released his debut album, “Crazy Life.” Later, he appeared in the television dance program ‘Soul Train.’ Afterward, he was invited to tour with Stevie Wonder in the year 1974.

Climbing the success

His next album was released in 1976, the album named “Gist of the Gemini” through A&M Records. “Brother to Brother” his sixth studio also with A&M, produced the single “I Just Wanna Stop”, which reached No. 4 on the Billboard magazine chart, No. 1 in Canada, and received a Grammy Award nomination. His next album, “Nightwalker,” yielded a top ten hit, “Living Inside Myself.”

Despite the success of singles “Black Cars” and “Hurts to Be in Love” (1985), as well as “Wild Horses” (1987), he only performed live sporadically throughout the 1980s after his 1979 world tour.  He released the album “Inconsolable Man” in 1990 and toured extensively for the first time in more than a decade. In the year 1991, he released his album “Live in Montreal.”

Martine St. Clair, a Québécoise singer, recorded “Wheels of Life” as a duet with Vanelli in 1993, as well as a French-language version of “L’Amour Est Loi.” Vanelli waited four years after his last ‘Live’ album before releasing one of his best albums to date, the jazz-influenced “Yonder Tree.” When it was released in 1995, the album received acclaim from both critics and fans.

In 1998, he released another album “Slow Love” a collection of beautifully crafted romantic songs, slightly more than his previous album. In 2003, he released another album “Canto” with BMG. This album highlights melodies sung in English, Italian, Spanish, and French, which proved particularly successful in Europe.

Continued his musical works

He released a best-of album in 2006, but this time he deviated from the norm by including 7 completely new pop songs alongside many of his previously best-known songs.

Following major concert and festival success in the late 1990s and early 2000s, he established a home in The Netherlands, where he spends many months of the year recording, performing, and teaching. His new album, written, performed, and produced with Dutch jazz pianist Michiel Borstlap, was released in early 2008.

Vanneli turned into an image of sports for the NBA title run by the Boston Celtics in 2008. During the 2008 season, the video crew at the TD Banknorth Garden played a clip from Dick Clark’s American Bandstand featuring a bearded disco dancer dressed in a tight Gino Vannelli T-shirt after each blowout home victory. Vannelli T-shirts became popular at Celtics games, and the tradition became known as “Gino Time” in Boston.

After being used in an ANWB commercial on TV and radio, “People Gotta Move” became a minor hit in the Netherlands in 2008. Sono Recording Group released Vannelli’s Live in L.A. CD/DVD compilation on May 13, 2014. The performance was captured live onstage at the historic Saban Theater in Los Angeles on November 8, 2013, and was Vannelli’s first performance in the city in over 15 years. The recording also marks the three Vannelli brothers’ first on-stage collaboration in many years.

Awards

During his musical career, he has earned a name, fame, money, and a couple of awards. He earned the Juno Awards for Best Male Artist category (1976, 1979) and the same award for Recording Engineer of the Year, with Joe Vannelli (1986, 1987, and 1991). Meanwhile, he was also nominated for a Grammy Award in 1978 for his song “I Just Wanna Stop.”
