Liverpool
After graduating from St. Margaret’s Church of England High School in 1982, Ablett took a position as a trainee at his hometown club, Liverpool. On December 20, 1986, while regular defenders Barry Venison and Mark Lawrenson were out due to injury, he made his Liverpool debut in a 0-0 league away draw with Charlton Athletic.
He made five more appearances that season, and on April 18, 1987, in a 3-0 home league victory over Nottingham Forest, he scored his only goal for the team. Ablett supported Liverpool’s defense alongside seasoned players like Gary Gillespie, Steve Nicol, and captain Alan Hansen as they won the League title and advanced to the 1988 FA Cup Final. Due to Liverpool’s unexpected 1-0 loss to Wimbledon in the latter competition, Ablett only received a runners-up medal.
Additionally, Liverpool advanced to their second straight FA Cup final in 1988–89. After defeating Merseyside rivals Everton 3-2, they were successful this time. However, they were defeated by Arsenal for the League crown with essentially the final kick of the year. With just three league games missed that season, Ablett had already cemented his position as the team’s regular left back.

Everton
In January 1992, after 147 appearances for the Reds, Ablett was sold to Everton for £750,000 by Graeme Souness, the manager of Liverpool after Kenny Dalglish’s resignation on February 22. In a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest at Goodison Park on January 19, 1992, he made his league debut for the team.
Furthermore, Ablett became the only player to win the FA Cup with both Merseyside teams when he won it with Everton in 1995. Later Career
Gary Ablett went on to play in 128 league games and score five goals for Everton. He then had a brief loan with Sheffield United before signing a permanent deal with Birmingham City for £390,000. New manager Trevor Francis was trying to assemble a team that could contend for a spot in the Premier League when Ablett joined Birmingham City.
He scored twice in his three years with the Blues, once in the league against Swindon Town and once in the FA Cup against Leeds United. Trevor Francis, the manager of Birmingham City, released him in 1999. After brief stints with Blackpool (where he played under former Anfield teammate Steve McMahon and scored once against Luton Town) and Wycombe Wanderers, he signed with Long Island Rough Riders in the American A-League in June 2000. At the age of 36, Ablett was put on trial by Grimsby Town in February 2002.
Moreover, Gary Ablett made a cameo appearance in Replay 86 in 2006, a charity game between the Everton and Liverpool teams that had previously faced off in the 1986 FA Cup Final. His team only had five league victories in the 2009–10 campaign because the club was under administration the entire time. The club was relegated at the end of the season after falling 25 points short of staying up. On June 17, 2010, the day the 2015 Group acquired ownership of the club, he departed.
Illness and Death
In July 2010, Gary Ablett decided to join Ipswich Town’s coaching staff and signed a one-year contract with the club. He became ill in the practice field, and doctors found that he had non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer.
Ablett passed away on January 1, 2012, 16 months after being diagnosed, when he was 46 years old. Former teammates, current players, and the managers of Everton and Liverpool attended his funeral, which was held at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on January 17, 2012. Jacqueline Ablett, Ablett’s widow, has supported calls for research into the theory that artificial turf causes cancer.
