Malcolm X is a late American Muslim minister and human rights activist who was a prominent figure during the civil rights movement. Initially, he was sentenced to ten years in prison for burglary in 1946. During his time in prison, he began to transform his life. He began reading books on history, philosophy, and religion.
In prison, he joined the Nation of Islam, adopting the name Malcolm X to represent his unknown African ancestral surname while rejecting “the White slavemaster name of ‘Little,'” and quickly rose to become one of the organization’s most influential leaders after his release in 1952.

For 12 years, he was the organization’s public face, advocating for Black empowerment and the separation of Black and White Americans, while criticizing Martin Luther King Jr. and the mainstream civil rights movement for emphasizing nonviolence and racial integration.
Malcolm X’s fiery speeches and uncompromising views on racial justice gained him a significant following, particularly among young African Americans. However, in 1964, he experienced a significant ideological transformation after a pilgrimage to Mecca, which exposed him to a more inclusive and egalitarian vision of Islam.
He began to distance himself from the Nation of Islam and its leader, Elijah Muhammad, criticizing their separatist ideology and advocating for racial integration and cooperation among all races.
His growing disillusionment with the Nation of Islam and his shift towards a more inclusive philosophy made him a target for assassination. On February 21, 1965, he was shot multiple times during a speech in New York City. He succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the age of 39.
