Frances joined WHDH in Boston in 2001 and was promoted to the position of news anchor in 2006. It was announced in July 2011 that Rivera would depart WHDH for a New York TV position in August 2011 owing to personal and family reasons. Thursday, August 18, 2011, was the day of her final Boston broadcast.
On Sunday, August 28, 2011, at 6:14 a.m., she started her broadcast at the WPIX Pix11 Morning News in New York City to cover Hurricane Irene.
Further, Rivera received a buyout offer from WPIX on August 6, 2013, and he left the network at the end of the following month. In 2014, she became a co-anchor for MSNBC. She and Phillip Mena have co-anchored Early Today since 2017.
