Early Life

Professional Career
On the 29th of June 2017, Flynn Downes signed a one-year professional contract with Ipswich Town, with the option of a further year. After impressing manager Mick McCarthy throughout pre-season, he signed a new three-year contract with the club on July 19.
The manager kept him at the club until the summer of 2020. He made his professional debut on the first day of the 2017-18 season. He replaced the injured Andre Dozzell in first-half stoppage time of a 1-0 home victory over Birmingham City.
Luton Town
After, he joined League Two leaders Luton Town on loan until the end of 2017–18, on the 31st of January 2018. On the 3rd of February 2018, he made his debut for the club, starting in Luton’s 1–0 home win over Exeter City.
After appearing in ten matches, he finished the loan as Luton was promoted to League One after finishing second in League Two.
Return form loan
After this, he regularly appeared for the first team during the 2018–19 season, making 30 appearances across all competitions – ending in the team being relegated to League One.
Moreover, he signed a new three-year contract with the club in March 2019, with the option of a further year with Town. He scored his debut goal in a 3–2 home victory over Leeds United on the final day of the season.
Following Ipswich’s relegation to League One in the 2019-20 season, he remained a regular. On August 31, he scored his first goal of the season in a 3-0 home win over Shrewsbury Town.
Later, on December 1, 2019, he led Ipswich Town for the first time in an FA Cup second-round fixture against Coventry City, making him the club’s youngest captain in history at the age of 20.
On September 1, 2020, the club announced that it had rejected two approaches for Downes from Premier League clubs, one of which was widely speculated to be Crystal Palace. After the second bid was refused, he reportedly handed in a transfer request and was consequently left out of the club’s first three games.
Then, on September 16, he returned to the first team as a second-half replacement in an EFL Cup second-round match against Fulham. He then suffered a knee injury in a 1-1 draw with MK Dons on October 3rd, which sidelined him for two months. During an injury-plagued 2020-21 season, he appeared in 25 games.
Swansea City
Downes signed a four-year deal, for a fee reportedly around £1.5 million with Swansea City on 10 August 2021. He finished 92.6% of his 2,465 attempted passes achieving the highest pass-completion rate in the top four divisions in English football for 2021–22.
West Ham United
He signed with West Ham United on a five-year contract, with a further one-year option, for an undisclosed fee, on 7 July 2022. According to BBC, the signing amount was assumed around £12 million. In a 92nd-minute substitute for Jarrod Bowen in a 2–0 home defeat to Manchester City, on 7 August 2022, he made his Premier League debut.

Meanwhile, he was part of the squad in the 2023 UEFA Europa Conference League final, against Fiorentina in Prague on the 7 June 2023. West Ham lifted their first trophy in 43 years with a 2–1 victory.
Southampton
He joined Southampton on a season-long loan, on 21 August 2023. On 26th August, he made his debut for the club, in a 2–1 victory against Queens Park Rangers, coming on as a substitute for Jack Stephens in the 25th minute.
International Career
On the 24th of August 2017, Downes was called up to the England under-19 team. He appeared in two friendly matches against Poland and Germany. Moreover, he made his national debut on 5 September in a 3–1 defeat. Meanwhile, he played five times representing England at under-19 level.
On November 9, 2018, he was named to the England under-20 team’s standby list for a match against Germany. Three days later, he was brought into the squad and got his first cap as an 89th-minute replacement in a 2-0 victory the following week.
