Ethan Horvath began his professional career by signing a contract with Norwegian Club Molde FK in 2013. Moreover, he debuted in a Molde matchday squad on August 10, 2013. He made his professional debut on May 16, 2015, after replacing Ørjan Nyland in the 55th minute of the match. After Nyland was sold to Bundesliga club Ingolstadt 04 on the 1st of July 2015, leaving Horvath as Molde’s starting goalkeeper at age 20.

By the end of the 2015 Tippeligaen season, he had helped Molde surrender only 31 goals, the league’s second-best record behind champions Rosenborg. He played in the Europa League on October 2, 2015, against Ajax, making 10 saves in a 1-1 tie. He was named Team of the Week in recognition of his savings achievement.

Club Brugge

On January 3, 2017, he signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Belgian side Club Brugge. Moreover, on May 5, he debuted as Brugge’s starting goalkeeper in the Championship playoffs.  He started three league playoff matches as Club Brugge won the championship and qualified for the 2018-19 UEFA Champions League group stage.

On July 13, 2021, he signed a new contract with EFL Championship team Nottingham Forest when his term with team Brugge expired. He came in as a 90th-minute replacement for Forest in their 1-0 play-off final win over Huddersfield Town at Wembley Stadium on May 29, 2022, due to an injury to starting goalkeeper Brice Samba. Horvath was loaned to Championship side Luton Town for the 2022-23 season on July 2, 2022, where he helped them win promotion through the play-offs.

Cardiff City

He signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Welsh EFL Championship side Cardiff City for an undisclosed fee on the 1st of February 2024.

International Career

Ethan has represented his home country in different age levels in U14,  U20, U23, and senior. He was chosen to the United States’ under-20 roster for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand, however his club did not release him.

He was part of the 23-man U.S. roster for the Copa América Centenario in June 2016. On October 7, 2016, he made his U.S. debut, keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Cuba.

He came in as a second-half replacement in the 2021 CONCACAF Nations League Final on June 6, 2021, after starting goalkeeper Zack Steffen suffered a non-contact knee injury.

Horvath proved to be vital in the United States’ 3-2 triumph, as he made many key stops, including stopping Andrés Guardado’s penalty late in extra time, which would have knotted the score and most likely pushed the game to a penalty shootout.

He was added to the US squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar on November 9, 2022. Horvath received no playing time throughout the tournament, with instead serving as Matt Turner’s backup.
