The names of his parents are Edward Coen and Rena Neumann Coen. Meanwhile, his father served in the United States Army during World War II and then worked as an Economics Professor at the University of Minnesota. On the other hand, his mother was employed as an art historian at St. Cloud State University. He was raised with his older brother Joel Coen and a sister named Deborah who is a psychiatrist by profession. Ethan and his brother Joel were interested in watching and making films from very early.

Ethan Coen – Education

He attended St. Louis Park High School and he graduated in the year 1976. Later, he studied at the Bard College at Simon’s Rock in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Additionally, he studied philosophy at Princeton University.

Professional Career

After completing his graduation, Ethan Coen joined his brother Joel Coen in New York and took up a series of temporary office jobs including one as a statistical typist at Macy’s department store. Their first commercial film production together was the 1984 film “Blood Simple,” which they co-wrote, co-produced, co-directed, and edited.

Though the brothers were involved in all stages of filmmaking from this time until 2004, Joel was listed as the director and Ethan as the producer of the movie. Under the moniker Roderick Jaynes, the brothers shared screenwriting credits and also edited their films together.

Following the critical and economic success of their debut film, the brothers’ next collaboration was “Crimewave” (1985), for which they co-wrote the screenplay (with Sam Raimi) and also performed uncredited parts.

“Raising Arizona” (1987), “Miller’s Crossing” (1990), “Barton Fink” (1991), “Fargo” (1996), “The Big Lebowski” (1998), “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (2000), “No Country for Old Men” (2007), “A Serious Man” (2009), “True Grit” (2010), and “Inside Llewyn Davis” (2013) are among their most acclaimed works.

Recent Works

Many of their films are American, typically analyzing the culture of the American South and American West in both present and historical situations. The brothers usually write, direct, and produce their films together.

But since “The Tragedy of Macbeth” (2021), which was directed by Joel without Ethan’s involvement, the brothers have begun directing solo pieces, with the documentary “Jerry Lee Lewis: Trouble in Mind” (2022) serving as Ethan’s first directing effort without Joel’s involvement, followed by “Drive-Away Dolls” (2023).

Until “The Ladykillers” (2004), Joel was solely credited with directing and Ethan with producing, or they split editing duties as Roderick and Reginald Jaynes.  Angelina Jolie’s biographical war drama “Unbroken” (2014), Steven Spielberg’s historical cold war film “Bridge of Spies” (2015), and lesser-known, commercially unsuccessful comedies such as “Crimewave” (1985), “The Naked Man” (1998), and “Gambit” (2012) were all written by the Coens. Ethan also writes short stories, plays, and poems.
