Eileen McNamara started her journalism career at Barnard. She began as a campus correspondent for the Daily News in New York City before graduating from The News-Times of Danbury, CT, and United Press International in Boston. She got the opportunity to work at the Boston Globe for nearly 30 years. During that time, she went on to cover everything from the night police beat to the United States Congress.
Likewise, she was first hired as a newsroom secretary. She then was able to work her way up through the general assignment staff, the State House Bureau, the special projects team, and the Sunday magazine staff to the position of columnist in the year 1995. On top of that, she was also able to win the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in the year 1997.
Moreover, McNamara has been the recipient of writing as well as public service awards from the American Society of Newspaper Editors. And, also from the Sigma Delta Chi, the Robert F. Kennedy Foundation, and others for a reporting career. This career mainly focused on social issues such as infant mortality, domestic violence, and juvenile crime. Then, she became a winner of the “Yankee Quill Award” in the year 2007. This award is the highest individual honour given by the Academy of New England Journalists.
She also was able to appear on The Today Show, Larry King Live, and Nightline when she was already a regular on local public affairs programs in Boston. Also, on September 25, 2006, she was able to star on “The Daily Show”. Eileen is also an author. Her two previous books are “Breakdown: Sex, Suicide, and the Harvard Psychiatrist” and “The Parting Glass: A Toast to the Traditional Pubs of Ireland”. The former book was an Edgar Award finalist in the year 1994.
Furthermore, Eileen McNamara went on to contribute to the Boston Globe’s coverage of the clergy sexual abuse scandal by recommending that the Spotlight Team look further into the cases she had reported on previously. In the 2015 film Spotlight, McNamara was played by actress Maureen Keiller. Spotlight won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2016.
