Edward Norton was born on August 18, 1969, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. His full name is Edward Harrison Norton and holds American nationality. After completing his graduation, Edward Norton worked not-for-profit as a representative for his grandfather’s company, Enterprise Community Partners, in Osaka, Japan. He subsequently relocated to New York City to begin a full-time acting career.

In 1994, he was cast in a production of Edward Albee’s “Fragments” following an audition with the writer and producer, Edward Albee.

Acting Debut

He made his acting debut in the 1996 film, “Primal Fear” along with Richard Gere. His performance as a mentally unstable choirboy accused of the murder of a priest earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. That same year, he acted opposite Drew Barrymore in Woody Allen’s romantic comedy “Everyone Says I Love You,” as well as with Woody Harrelson in “The People vs. Larry Flint.”

In the 1998 film “American History X” he portrayed Derek Vinyard. The next year, he was cast along with Brad Pitt in David Fincher’s “Fight Club.” In the year 2000, he made his directorial debut with the romantic comedy “Keeping the Faith” and also played a supporting role.

Continued appearing successful career

Norton then starred opposite Anthony Hopkins in “Red Dragon” (2002), a prequel to the 1991 smash ‘Silence of the Lambs.’ He also appears in Spike Lee’s film “25th Hour” (2002). In 2002, he earned an Obie Award for his portrayal in Lanford Wilson’s “Burn This.”

He played the role of Eisenheim, a magician who uses his skills to beguile the crown prince of Vienna in the 2006 film “The Illusionist.” After portraying Bruce Banner in the 2008 blockbuster movie “The Hulk,” Norton had a praised performance in the 2009 comedy-thriller “Leaves of Grass,”  playing both a button-down philosophy professor and his hedonistic marijuana-growing twin brother.

In 2010, he appeared opposite Robert De Niro in the crime drama “Stone.” He then starred in Wes Anderson’s whimsical “Moonrise Kingdom” (2012). That same year, he played a nefarious former CIA agent in the spy thriller “The Bourne Legacy.” He portrayed a police inspector in Anderson’s 2014 stylized caper “The Grand Budapest Hotel.”

In the black comedy “Birdman,” he plays Broadway method actor Mike Shiner, who is skilled but difficult to collaborate with. Critics praised both the film and Norton’s performance. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, while Norton received his third nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Recent projects

Norton then starred in the film “Collateral Beauty” (2016), portraying a coworker of a grieving father. He later voiced a scruffy canine in Anderson’s stop-motion animated film “Isle of Dogs” (2018).

He returned to directing in 2019 with “Motherless Brooklyn,” an adaption of Jonathan Lethem’s novel about a private investigator with Tourette syndrome; he also appeared in the crime thriller and wrote the screenplay.

Then, he rejoined with Anderson for “The French Dispatch” (2021), in which he portrayed a gangster who kidnaps the son of a police officer. In 2022, he portrayed a tech billionaire in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.” He will be playing Pete Seeger in the biopic “A Complete Unknown,” directed by James Mangold.
