College Career

During his college years, Dominik Meichtry started swimming for the California Golden Bears representing the college. Moreover, he came in 2nd position at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAAs) competition during his sophomore year.

He captained the CAL men’s swim team during his junior and senior year leading the Bears to a fourth-place finish at the NCAAs. Meichtry earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and sociology in the spring of 2009.

He received his training at The Race Club, a summer swimming program created by Olympic swimmers Gary Hall, Jr. and Gary Hall, Sr. Moreover, the club has trained well-known swimmers such as Roland Mark Schoeman, Mark Foster, Ryk Neethling, and Therese Alshammar.

Professional Career

Dominik Meichtry represented his country in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In the competition, he swam the 8th fastest time ever recorded in the 200m Freestyle event. In the process, he defeated Michael Phelps, who may not have been swimming at his best in the quarter-finals, to become the first Swiss swimmer to be the top seed going into the semi-finals.

He placed sixth in the 200m Freestyle final (Phelps won the race, swimming over 2-1/2 seconds ahead of Meichtry). He was also the first Swiss to break the 49-second barrier as he started the 4×100 Freestyle relay in 48.96 seconds. Later in the race, he lowered his record in the 100 Freestyle event to 48.55.

He earned his first international medal in December 2008 at the 2008 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Rijeka, Croatia. Moreover, he earned silver in the 200m freestyle but lost out on the European title by 0.02 seconds.

He relocated his training base to Southern California in the fall of 2009 to train with Dave Salo for the Trojan Swim Club at the University of Southern California.

Later, he qualified for his third Olympic Games in the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, China, under the guidance of Dave Salo. He finished seventh in the 200m Freestyle in 1:47.02 and set a new national record in the 100m Butterfly.

On the 5th of October 2013, Dominik Meichtry married the American Swimmer, Jessica Hardy. By profession, his wife is a Gold Medalist in Swimming. With the marriage, the couple is blessed with a daughter Olivia Adele Meichtry. Currently, the family is living happily and there is no sign of their separation at the moment.
