His first job in broadcasting was as a Southern Television announcer. First, he was known by his full name Richard Davies but changed to Dickie Davies at the suggestion of his ITV Sports colleague Jimmy Hill.

Similarly, he started hosting the ITV program series named World of Sport in 1965. He worked as an understudy to Eamonn Andrews, taking over as host in 1968 by ITV to present it when Andrews left the show. He remained with ITV even after the World of Sport ended in 1985.

Furthermore, he presented boxing, darts, and snooker, as well as taking part in their coverage of the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In August 1989, he left ITV Sport. After quitting ITV, he joined the original Eurosport which was owned by Sky and the European Broadcasting Union at the time.

Likewise, he was the face of Eurosport snooker programming which include the one-off Mita World Masters in 1991. Also, he broadcasted sports bulletins from his house as Classic FM’s inaugural sports editor. He experienced a stroke in 1995, forcing him to retire from Classic FM.
