Hallowell was found dead with an axe on her head by her adopted son Carlos Hallowell on the 13th of July 2019. When Carlos called the police, he explained that he and his mother had attended a funeral that day, and returned home between 2 and 3 p.m.
He had found his mother’s body after being awakened from a nap by their barking dogs. However, following the nine-week conviction, Carlos Hallowell was taken into custody by the investigation authorities and charged with first-degree murder.

The sheriff stated that it was difficult to comprehend how someone could savagely kill his mother. Carlos Hallowell was the target of online and digital evidence as well.
The sheriff explained that each digital device leaves a unique trail of evidence from the scene behind whatever was done in daily life. He continued by saying that the 17-year-old boy may have attempted to hide the physical evidence from them and destroy it.
In 2021, Carlos was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder. Being a minor when he killed his mother, he was not eligible for the death penalty

Carlos Hallowell, Hallowell’s son, was expelled from Seven Rivers Christian School because he was in possession of marijuana and had used many drugs at such a young age.
Hallowell was discovered to have had a happy childhood and performed exceptionally well in school, but in the courtroom, during the trial, he stated that things changed when he turned 11 years old. He began using alcohol and drugs, experimenting with marijuana, cocaine, prescription pills, acid, methamphetamine, and ecstasy.

He was expelled from school in January 2019, but he tried to hide this information from his mother until May 2019, when she discovered it on her own.
Denise Hallowell was advised by the judge during sentencing to be stricter with her son in order to help him overcome his drug problems. According to reports, Carlos wanted to take over his mother’s property, cars, and real estate business.

Denise adopted two children, one from Guatemala and the other from Honduras. In 2016, she was accused of being abused by her younger son, Carlos, when he was 12 years old. Moreover, Denise was a teacher at the time.
