Professional Life
In 2007, Johnson began his career in mixed martial arts (MMA). Fortunately, he won his professional debut via first-round knockout. After that, he appeared on multiple local shows and won his next 8 fights including five in a row.
At the Alaska Fighting Championships, he fought and won via head-kick KO. After winning, he earned a deal with the WEC.

On April 24, 2010, he made his World Extreme Cagefighting debut at bantamweight against Brad Pickett. Therefore, it was at WEC 48 in Sacramento, California.
He was unable to defend the many takedowns executed by Pickett even though Johnson showed good kickboxing. The prediction was made by Joe Rogan that should the WEC implement a flyweight division.
On September 30, 2010, he was expected to face Clint Godfrey at WEC 51. Hence, Godfrey was forced off the card and replaced by WEC newcomer Nick Pace. Thus, he finally defeated Pace via unanimous decision, to hand Pace his first-ever MMA loss. On November 11, 2010, at WEC 52, he defeated Damacio Page via third-round submission.
Additionally, World Extreme Cagefighting merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship, on October 28, 2010. Moreover, all WEC fighters were transferred to the UFC, as part of the merger.
On February 5, 2011, HE faced Japanese superstar Norifumi Yamamoto, at UFC 126. In his debut, he utilized takedowns in rounds 1 and 2, controlling Yamamoto throughout the fight. Later on, he was rewarded with a unanimous decision victory.

On May 28, 2011, at UFX 130, he was scheduled to face Renan Barão. Similarly, he faced Miguel Torres after Torres’ opponent. Hence, Brad Pickett was forced off the card with an injury.
He used his superior wrestling to control Torres and won a 29-28 unanimous decision victory. On October 1, 2011, he fought Dominick Cruz at UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson for the UFC bantamweight title.
In the finals of the UFC Flyweight Tournament, he faced Joseph Benavidez on September 22, 2012, at UFC 152. Fortunately, he defeated Benavidez in a close and fast-paced fight via split decision (48-47, 47-48, 49-46). Therefore, he became the inaugural UFC Flyweight Champion. On January 26, 2013, at UFC on Fox, he fought John Dodson: Johnson vs. Dodson.
Moving on, he was expected to face John Moraga on April 13, 2013, at The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale. Thus, he was forced out of the bout with an injury. Later, Moraga was pulled from the event as well.
On July 27, 2013, at UFC on FOX, his bout with Moraga eventually took place. It was Johnson vs. Moraga, where Johnson was looking to defend his title for a 2nd time.
Likewise, on July 30, 2016, he had been expected to face Wilson Reis at UFC 201. He withdrew from his bout at UFC 201 due to an undisclosed injury suffered, on July 8.
On April 15, 2017, he faced Wilson Reis at UFC on Fox 24. Similarly, he won by armbar submission in the third round. Subsequently, he received a Performance of the Night bonus. After the win, he tied Anderson Silva for the most consecutive title defenses in UFC history.
