At the Alaska Fighting Championships, he fought and won via head-kick KO. After winning, he earned a deal with the WEC.
On April 24, 2010, he made his World Extreme Cagefighting debut at bantamweight against Brad Pickett. Therefore, it was at WEC 48 in Sacramento, California.

On February 5, 2011, HE faced Japanese superstar Norifumi Yamamoto, at UFC 126. In his debut, he utilized takedowns in rounds 1 and 2, controlling Yamamoto throughout the fight. Later on, he was rewarded with a unanimous decision victory.

He used his superior wrestling to control Torres and won a 29-28 unanimous decision victory. On October 1, 2011, he fought Dominick Cruz at UFC Live: Cruz vs. Johnson for the UFC bantamweight title.
In the finals of the UFC Flyweight Tournament, he faced Joseph Benavidez on September 22, 2012, at UFC 152.
