Davinder Singh – Davinder Singh is an Indian former police officer and DSP (Deputy Superintendent of Police) of Jammu and Kashmir. Davinder Singh came to the news because of his arrest on the 11th of January 2020, along with the “most wanted” militants in South Kashmir’s Kulgam town (Mir Bazar).

Early Life

Davinder Singh was born in 1963, in India. As of now, his age is 60 years old, and holds Indian nationality. Similarly, he practices Sikhism religion. Meanwhile, there is not much known related to his ethnicity, zodiac sign, the exact datebirth, and birthplace.

After completing his graduation, Davinder Singh joined the police as a sub-inspector in 1990. Meanwhile, he has served the Jammu and Kashmir police as an inspector and deputy superintendent for over 25 years.

Moreover, he came to headline news in India after he was arrested on the 11th of January 2020. During that time, he served as a DSP of Jammu and Kashmir. He got arrested with two of the most wanted terrorist knowterroristseed Baba’ and ‘Altaaf.’

Moreover, the two militants were Hizbul Mujahideen militants, while the driver was identified as Irfan Shafi, a former lawyer from Diaroo in South Kashmir’s Shopian district.

According to a South Kashmir police official, the vehicle (a Hyundai i10 car) in which the militants and DSP Davinder Sigh were traveling and intercepted based on a specific input. There was a mention in the input that a top militant was in the car. However, there was no mention of a police officer accompanying the militants in the car in the information.

Davinder Singh – Awards

Davinder Singh had a solid track record in anti-militancy operations and was awarded the gallantry award in 2017. He was reportedly one of 76 police officers from Jammu and Kashmir to receive the President’s Police Medal on India’s Independence Day in 2019.

However, the Ministry of Home Affairs later refuted this claim. Singh ] photographed with foreign diplomats who visited Kashmir in January 2020 as part of the official team in charge of welcoming them.

Controversy

As a DSP, he has been a part of a number of coseveral throughout his career. The first such incident occurred twenty years after his arrest when a group of five gunmen hijacked a truck from Srinagar’s Athwajan periphery.

They looted its cargo, which belonged to a close relative of the then-in-charge, Ghulam Mohiuddin Shah, the acting Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir. Later, Shah reported to Jammu and Kashmir’s then-Director General of Police that the hijackers were counter-insurgents who had received AK-47 rifles from none other than Davinder Singh. However, at the time, no action was taken against Singh.

In another case, an FIR for ‘extortion’ was filed against Singh in response to a businessman’s complaint; however, the investigation was never completed. Davinder Singh’s name was once again in the news in 2001 when he was serving as deputy superintendent of the special operations group in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district.

He was transferred as a result of widespread public outrage over custodial deaths. Singh’s name was listed in an FIR in 2015 for allegedly extorting money from ordinary people and falsely implicating them in police cases.
