Early Life
David Hallberg came to the world on the 18th of May 1982, in Rapid City, South Dakota, the United States of America. He has a birth sign of Taurus and is 40 years old as of 2022. As a child, David was inspired to dance when he saw a Fred Astaire film in the family living room. At a young age, he decided to pursue a career as a professional ballet dancer, and with his family’s support, he trained at the Ballet Arizona School under the direction of Kee Juan Han.
He studied for a year at the Paris Opera Ballet School in 1999. Later, he joined American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company in 2001.
Professional Career
David Hallberg is a highly acclaimed ballet dancer with a distinguished career spanning over two decades. He started his professional career in 2001 with the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) as a soloist and was quickly promoted to principal dancer in 2005. In addition, he has also worked as a guest artist with numerous international ballet companies.
Meanwhile, he has appeared in several ballet competitions and several other dance studios as a guest artist. In 2010, he won the Prix Benois de la Danse due to his fabulous performance in Giselle as Count Albrecht.

In 2011, he became the first American to join the Bolshoi Ballet as a principal dancer, where he worked alongside some of the most talented dancers in the world. He continued to perform with both the American Ballet Theatre and the Bolshoi Ballet until 2017 when he suffered a serious ankle injury that required multiple surgeries and a lengthy recovery period. He has also served as an artistic director of The Australian Ballet.
Recent Career
In addition to his work in ballet, he has also written a memoir titled “A Body of Work: Dancing to the Edge and Back,” which was published in 2017. He established the David Hallberg Scholarship to guide aspiring male dancers at American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company and Ballet Arizona.
Since 2018. he has directed ABT Incubator, a two-week choreographic program at Ballet Theater. He was named The Australian Ballet’s new artistic director in March 2020, taking over for David McAllister. In January 2021, he took the role. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Hallberg’s final dance tour was postponed. Hallberg is set to have a “proper farewell performance” during ABT’s 2021 Metropolitan Opera House season.
