Darwin Nunez

Darwin Nunezis a well-known professional football player from Uruguay. Darwin Nunez plays from a striker position in the Premier League club Liverpool and the Uruguay national team.

Early Life

Darwin Nunez was born in Artigas, Uruguay on the 24th of June 1999. His birth name is Darwin Gabriel Núñez Ribeiro and he is 24 years old. He holds a Uruguayan nationality and believes in Christianity by religion. He has a birth sign of Cancer and belongs to Spanish ethnicity.

His parents’ names are Bibiano Nunez (father) and Silvia Ribeiro (mother). Professionally, his father was a construction site worker and could not support his family enough. In contrast, his mother was a bottle hawker and sold them to support her husband. He has an elder brother whose name is Junior.

However, there is not much information regarding his academic qualifications. Due to his weak family’s economic conditions, he could not attend or study in school.

Early Career

Darwin Nunez started playing football at a very young age. Moreover, he used to play for local clubs La Luz and San Miguel before being scouted at the age of 14 by former Uruguay international José Perdomo and then moving by himself to the capital city Montevideo to join the ranks of Peñarol.

However, the young player struggled with homesickness, he returned to his hometown to spend time with his family and went back to Peñarol a year later. When he was 17 years old, he suffered a cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for over a year and required two operations.

After this, his elder brother Junior quit the club and gave up football to provide for the family.

Club Career

Peñarol

Nunez joined the youth team of Penarol and started playing for the club. On the 22nd of November 2017, he made his first-team debut in the Primera División after he for Peñarol as a second-half substitute for Maxi Rodríguez in a 2–1 away loss against River Plate Montevideo.

Later, the player went to knee surgery for a second time. He scored his debut professional goal on the 13th of October 2018, netting the opener in a 2–0 home defeat of Fénix. Following this, he hit a hat trick in a 4–0 routing of Boston River on the 14th of July 2019. In the 2018-19 season, he appeared in 8 matches for the club, scoring 3 goals in all competitions. 

Almería

He signed a five-year contract with the  Spanish Segunda División club Almería on the 29th of August 2019. It was rumored that the club record fee of $4.5 million plus $1.5 million in variables.

On the 3rd of October 2019, he made his debut for the club as a half-time substitute in a 4–2 league defeat against Sporting de Gijón. He started for the first time, scoring his first goal for his new club in a 3–2 home win against Extremadura with a penalty on the 27th of October 2019.

In the 2019-20 season, he appeared in 32 matches for the club, scoring 16 goals and providing 3 assists in all the competitions.

Benfica

Nunez signed a five-year contract with the Portuguese club Benfica on the 4th of September 2020. The club paid a record fee of €24 million, the most expensive signing in Portuguese football history.

On the 15th of September 2020, he made his debut for the club in a 2-1 loss against PAOK Salonika in the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. He scored his debut goals for the club with a hat-trick against Lech Poznan in a 4-2 away victory in a 2020-21 UEFA Europa League group stage match on the 22nd of October 2020.

Due to COVID-19, he was three weeks off and on the 3rd of December,  he returned to action against Lech Poznań in the Europa League group stage, scoring Benfica’s second goal in a 4–0 home victory.

During the season, he struggled with the effects of COVID-19 and various injuries and did not score for four months. In his debut season for the club, he made 44 appearances for the club, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists in all the competitions as he helped Benfica to a third-place finish and qualification for the Champions League third qualifying round.

Under went to surgery

He went to surgery in May 2021, due to an injury on his right knee, forcing him to miss Benfica’s first months of the new season. Later, he returned from the injury and made his appearance on 21 August 2021, replacing Everton in a 2-0 away victory over Gil Vicente, being booked in the process.

He scored his first two UEFA Champions League goals in a 3-0 home win against Barcelona on the 29th of September 2021. On the 27th of November 2021, the player scored his first hat-trick in the league as his team finished the first half at B SAD 7-0 up, though the game was abandoned early in the second half due to insufficient players on the COVID-affected host team.

Moreover, he scored a second hat trick against Famalicao in a 4-1 away win on the 12th of December 2021. And, making him the seventh player in the league to score back-to-back hat-tricks. He helped his team to reach the quarter-finals after, he scored the only goal in a 1-0 away win over Ajax on the 15th of March 2020, In the second leg of the Champions League round-of-16.

In the UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool, he scored a goal in a 1-3 away loss on the 5th of April 2022. For the club, he finished the season with 26 goals in 28 league games, being awarded the Bola de Prata award as the top scorer of the Primeira Liga, and being named in the Team of the Year and Player of the Year.

He signed a contract with Liverpool for the transfer of Núñez for a €75 million fee plus €25 million in add-ons on the 13th of June 2022. He made his debut for the club in a 3-1 win over Manchester City in the FA Community Shield at the King Power Stadium on the 30th of July 2022.

International Career

This footballer has represented Uruguay in various age levels; U20, U22, and the senior level. In the 2019 South American U20 Championship, the  Uruguay U20 team squad finished third and Nunez was also part of the team.

After playing in junior-level tournaments for the country. He was called up to the senior team for friendlies against Costa Rica and the United States in September 2019. He made his senior international team debut on the 16th of October 2019.  Nunez scored his first international goal for Uruguay in a 1-1 friendly draw against Peru.

He was listed in the final 26-man Uruguay team for the 2021 Copa America in Brazil in June 2021. However, his right knee injury left him out for two months and he missed the tournament. He was picked up for the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad for Uruguay by head coach Diego Alonso. Despite his good performances, Uruguay was eliminated in the group stages of the tournament.
