Early Life and Education

Daron Payne was born on May 27, 1997, in Birmingham, Alabama, U.S. He is presently 26 years old (as of 2023). He was born to his father Ron Payne and his mother Kemberly Smith. His father was also a school football player. Likewise, he has a twin brother named Darren. Darren is very much interested in art. They both share a very close and lovable bond. Similarly, Daron holds American nationality but his ethnicity is unknown. According to his date of birth, he was born under the sun sign Gemini.

Regarding his educational qualification, he is a graduate student. He attended Shades Valley for his higher-level education. Later, he enrolled at the University of Alabama for his graduation.

College Career

Payne recorded 13 tackles and a half-sack in 2015 as a true freshman at Alabama. In 2016, he had 1.5 sacks in addition to 36 tackles as a sophomore. He had five tackles and a half sack against Clemson in the national championship game. Payne was recognized as the defensive MVP of Alabama’s two postseason games as a junior in 2017. He picked off a pass in the Sugar Bowl game against Clemson and used the drive that ensued to score an offensive receiving touchdown.

Payne made six tackles in the national championship game against Georgia to help Alabama win their second title in three years. He declared his intention to enter the 2018 NFL Draft after his junior year. Payne asked to have his given name changed back to Daron for his professional career because it was frequently misspelled as Da’Ron while he was attending Alabama.

Professional Career

The Washington Redskins (now the Washington Commanders) selected Payne in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, 13th overall. He signed a four-year deal with a signing bonus of $8.56 million on May 10, 2018, for a total sum of US$14.4 million. In Week 3’s matchup with the Green Bay Packers, he recorded his first career sack. With 56 tackles, five sacks, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery at the end of his rookie season, he was selected for the 2018 PFWA All-Rookie Team.

Additionally, Payne forced quarterback Nick Mullens to fumble in Week 14 of the 2020 campaign against the San Francisco 49ers; the fumble was recovered and returned for a touchdown by Chase Young, who also recovered a forced fumble. During the 20-15 loss in Week 15 to the Seattle Seahawks, Payne made his first career interception off a pass thrown by Russell Wilson. Payne played 880 snaps throughout the 2020 NFL season, compiling 54 tackles, 3 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and an interception. In the playoff wild-card round, he also registered two sacks against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

On April 27, 2021, the team decided to exercise Payne’s fifth-year option, which secured a guaranteed salary of $8.529 million for the 2022 campaign. On August 5, he was reactivated. With less than one minute and a half remaining in the game, Payne and defensive end James Smith-Williams sacked Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton on fourth down to secure the Week 11 victory.

Payne racked up 5.5 sacks by Week 9 of the 2022 campaign, setting a new career high. He deflected Marcus Mariota’s attempt at a touchdown pass with 58 seconds left in the Week 12 game against the Atlanta Falcons, which cornerback Kendall Fuller intercepted in the end zone for a 19-13 victory. He finished the year with 64 tackles, 11.5 sacks, and five pass deflections, all new career highs. Payne was selected to play in his first Pro Bowl in January 2023 as Aaron Donald’s replacement. Before Payne signed a four-year, $90 million extension with the team on March 13, 2023, the Commanders placed a non-exclusive franchise tag on him.
