Detained by Myanmar Military

On the 24th of May 2021, Danny was arrested at the Yangon International Airport as he was preparing to leave the country and visit his family in Detroit. The exact reasons for Fenster’s detention were not immediately clear, but it was widely believed to be related to his journalistic activities and the military coup that took place in Myanmar earlier in 2021. The military junta has been cracking down on dissent and restricting media freedom in the country.

In connection with his work at Myanmar Now, Danny was charged with incitement, also known as sedition, for allegedly spreading false or inflammatory information under Section 17(1) of the colonial-era Unlawful Associations Act. Authorities charged him with violating Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act in October 2021. Public and press involvement in criminal proceedings has been restricted.

Previously, these colonial-era laws were used to prosecute political activists and journalists who covered opposition groups. On November 3, a Burmese court denied his bail application, and authorities charged him with violating immigration law. He was sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Myanmar military court on November 12.

Released from Jail and Returned to the United States.

His arrest drew significant international condemnation, with calls for his immediate release from human rights organizations, press freedom advocates, and various governments. The United States and other countries actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to secure his release and the release of other journalists and activists detained in Myanmar.
