Harris had appearances in shows and movies for television such as Archie Bunker’s Place and All My Children. Cynthia received a BAFTA Award nomination in 1979 for her role as the Duchess of Windsor in Edward and Mrs. Simpson.
She portrayed “comic yenta mom” Sylvia Buchman on the comedy Mad About You for five seasons, and she returned to the part for the show’s 2019 limited series revival. She portrayed “Mrs. B.” in television commercials for the now-defunct department store company Bradlees for nearly two decades.
In 1963, she made her Broadway debut in the play Natural Affection as an understudy. She made her Broadway debut in the Stephen Sondheim and George Furth musical Company in 1971. Harris co-founded The Actors Company Theatre in 1993, and she served as one of the company’s artistic directors.
