Corey Maggette is an American Former Professional Basketball Player. Corey Maggette is an NBA small forward who played with several teams during his career, beginning with the Orlando Magic in 1999 and ending with the Detroit Pistons in 2013. He then became an Analyst for Fox Sports.

Early Life and Childhood

Corey Maggette was born on November 12, 1979, in Melrose Park, Illinois, USA. He is 44 years old and is under the astrological sign, Scorpio. He holds American nationality and his full name is Corey Antoine Maggette. And, he is of African-American ethnicity.

Corey Maggette had a great basketball career starting from his time at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Illinois, where he became an All-American. Then he went on to play college basketball at Duke University.

During his freshman year, he was able to average 10.6 points and 3.9 rebounds per game and even became the ACC All-Rookie Team. Also, there was some controversy surrounding his eligibility due to accepting money from his summer league coach, but Duke wasn’t punished by the NCAA since they were unaware of the situation at the time.

Maggette was chosen as the 13th overall pick in the 1999 NBA draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. But he got traded to the Orlando Magic on draft night. The trade involved several players, and Maggette was the only one who was able to stay with the Magic. And, in his rookie season, he was able to play 77 games and averaged 8.4 points and 3.9 rebounds. He even had a season-high of 20 points against the Detroit Pistons on January 3.

Likewise, after being traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in the year 2000, he was able to make a name for himself as a solid forward and a consistent scorer. His teammates even gave him the nickname “Maximus.” He even went on to participate in the Slam Dunk Contest at the 2001 NBA All-Star Weekend.

And, in the 2004-05 season, he had career-highs in points, rebounds, assists, and free throw percentage. Unfortunately, he dealt with a foot injury that limited his playing time in the 2005-06 season. But he did make a strong comeback and helped the Clippers win their first playoff game in 13 years in 2006.

They even went on to win their first playoff series since moving from Buffalo. Maggette came off the bench and had an incredible performance in a series-saving win against the Phoenix Suns. But there were some alleged feuds with the coach but he did return strongly in the 2006-07 season.

Corey Maggette was able to join the Golden State Warriors in the year 2008. He was able to play as the sixth man for the Warriors. And had some impressive stats during his two seasons with the team. He averaged 19.3 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. In the year 2010, he was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks along with a draft pick.

And, on January 28, he went on to have a fantastic game with season-highs of 29 points and 11 rebounds in a win against the Toronto Raptors. But his journey didn’t end there and on June 23, 2011, he was traded to the Charlotte Bobcats as part of a three-team deal. Unfortunately, he only was able to play 32 games for the Bobcats due to the lockout-shortened season.

Moreover, Maggette was traded to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Ben Gordon and a future draft pick in the year 2012. However, he had a bit of a rough start to his time with the Pistons, missing the first eight games due to a calf injury.

But when he finally was able to make his debut on November 14, he went on to score 9 points and had 3 assists off the bench in a win against the Philadelphia 76ers. However, things didn’t go so well after that. He ended up sitting out the rest of the season from mid-December onwards due to personal reasons and not being played by coach Lawrence Frank.

Then, after the 2012-13 season, he went on to become a free agent and signed a training camp deal with the San Antonio Spurs. But unfortunately, he was waived after appearing in only two preseason games. And that’s when he decided to retire from basketball after 14 years in the NBA.

Post Career

Corey Maggette went on to join Fox Sports West and Prime Ticket as an analyst for the Los Angeles Clippers in October 2014. He then moved on to become a college basketball analyst for Fox Sports 1. And, in the year 2017, he was able to join the BIG3 team Power and had an amazing season. He became the 2018 BIG3 MVP and Captain of the Year after leading his team to a 7-1 record and winning the championship game. And in May 2019, he returned to defend his team’s championship and his MVP status.

Furthermore, Maggette did some incredible work with children off the court. He was a member of the Clippers Reading All-Star Team and had his program “Uh Oh Maggette-O Kids”. This program brought hundreds of children to Clippers games for free.

He also started the Corey Maggette Flight 50 Basketball Camp, initially inviting 50 kids. But it grew to over 600 kids attending each year. The camp even was able to win an “NBA Player’s Best Camp Award”. And, in addition, he went on to establish the Corey Cares Foundation to serve, mentor, and inspire the less fortunate in the community.
