Cheryl Burton

Cheryl Burton is an American news anchor. The current ABC 7 Chicago reporter is also the first-ever recipient of the 2005 “Sisters in the Spirit” Award.

Early Life and Childhood

Cheryl Burton was born on December 25, 1962, at Provident Hospital in Chicago. Her mother, Hattie was a teacher at the Chicago Public Schools. She is 61 years old.

Whereas her father Simpson served in the U.S. Air Force. Unfortunately, both her parents have passed away. Born on the day of Christmas, she is the fourth of five kids in her family. She has three sisters and a brother.

As a kid, she appeared on the “Romper Room” TV show. A few years she even participated in “Star Search.”

Consequently, she caught the eyes of a producer and was offered a job hosting “Simply Elegant,” a locally produced talk show. It was when she developed and improvised her speaking skills.

Education    

Regarding her education, Cheryl Burton attended Lindblom Technical High School which is now known as Lindblom Math & Science Academy. She graduated in 1980. Following graduation, she joined the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urban.

Here she studied biology and psychology to go to medical school, but she was concerned about money. During her college days, she was also part of the Chicago Bears’ cheerleader squad, the Honey Bears.

Relationship Status

Until 1995, Cheryl Burton was married to ABC 7 sports reporter Jim Rose. They had been dating since college and Rose surprised his then-girlfriend with a diamond engagement ring on Friday night before Super Bowl XX in New Orleans.

After the romantic proposal, the couple tied the knot in 1986. However, the marriage did not last long. The couple did not have any children together. Although she and Rose had to go through an unfortunate separation, they are still on good terms and are friends.

Career and Professional Life

Cheryl’s broadcasting career officially began in 1989 at WGN-TV in Chicago. She started as a co-anchored a nationally syndicated weekly series called, “MBR: The Minority Business Report”. 2 years later, she moved to Peoria, Illinois to work as a reporter at WMBD-TV.

Following that, she served for 2 years at KWCH-DT in Wichita, Kansas. Later in 1992, she joined WLS-TV. Here she first joined as a weekend co-anchor/reporter. Then in 2003, she was promoted to 5 p.m. weekday co-anchor and 10 p.m. contributing anchor.

A few years back, in 2018, she replaced Kathy Brock as the 10 pm anchor alongside Alan Krashesky. However, she also continued the 5 pm show and the 7 pm show on WCIU-TV.

Awards 

In the past 30 years, the contributions made by Cheryl Burton have been remarkable. The numerous awards that she has won reflect the brilliance of her work. in 2009, she won the NABJ (National Association of Black Journalists) Salute to Excellence International.

Before that, she won the Thurgood Marshall Award twice in 2004 and 2005. Similarly, the Chicago Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) honored Burton with the Russ Ewing Award in 2004.

The list continues, as she received the Kizzy Image and Achievement Award in 1998 and the Phenomenal Woman Award in 1997. However, the first-ever honor she received was the CABJ award for coverage of the Million Man March.

Apart from her professional success, she is also a wonderful human being. She has contributed to numerous community services.

In this regard, Burton 2005 became the first-ever human to win the “Sisters in the Spirit” Award. She has also won the 2009 Procter & Gamble Award.
