Professional Life

College Career

As he was already a part of his High School’s basketball team, he continued during his university days as well. Sonny Smith was the one who recognized his talent and recruited him into Auburn’s basketball team named; The Auburn Tigers.

One of the highlights of his college career was when he appeared in the NCAA Tournament held in the year 1984. This was the first and the only time he appeared in the NCAA Tournament. However, he didn’t play during his senior year.

Further about his career

For the 1984 NBA Draft, he was signed by the Philadelphia 76ers as their 5th pick for the first round. Under the training and guidance of Moses Malone, he was able to properly prepare himself for the games.

In his second year with the Philadelphia 76ers, he was promoted to the team’s leading rebounder and number two scorer. Similarly, he was the team’s starting power forward as well.

In the same year, he secured himself a spot in the All-NBA Second Team. After Moses Malone was traded to the Washington Bullets, before the start of the 1986-87 season, he was responsible for leading the team.

In his third season playing for the Philadelphia 76ers, he appeared in 5 games in the playoffs. Moreover, it was the first time he made it to the All-NBA Star Team.

On November 30, 1988, Barkley officially was named the first player in the history of the league to register a 40-point, 20-rebound, 5-assists, and 5-steal performance. Similarly, he also scored the highest points of his career during the regular season.

Phoenix Sun/ Houston Rockets

He was traded to Phoenix Sun for the 1992-93 season. At this point in his career, he was already a renowned name in the Sports Industry. He was quite the talk of the town by this time. He played his debut game for the Phoenix Sun on November 7, 1992.

During his time with the Phoenix Sun, he appeared in 24 play-offs and played altogether 76 games. Soon he was traded to the Houston Rockets in the year 1996.

In a match against his former team the Philadelphia 76ers, he suffered a ruptured left quadriceps in the year 1999. Similarly, Barkley played his final match as a professional basketball player against the Vancouver Grizzlies in a home game.

He was fortunate enough to compete in the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics, playing as a part of the US “Dream Team”. His team won the gold medal during that game. Likewise, he also won a gold medal in the 1996 Summer Olympics.
