Early Life and Childhood
Cerrie Burnell was born Claire Burnell on August 30, 1979, in Petts Wood, London, England. Her age is currently 43 years old (as of 2023). She was born to her dance teacher mother and her telecoms manager father. Likewise, she has a younger brother named John Burnell. At the age of 10, she began requesting the name “Cerrie” instead of her given name, Claire. She was raised in the southeast London suburb of Petts Wood. Although her parents encouraged her to use a prosthetic arm, she resisted from the beginning and stopped using one altogether when she was nine years old. Burnell was a part of the National Youth Theatre as well. She has made appearances on UK television in Holby City, EastEnders, Grange Hill, The Bill, and Comedy Lab, among other shows. She wrote the play Winged – A Fairytale, which was performed at the Tristan Bates Theatre in London in 2007 and was based on the true story of Violet, a one-winged fairy living in a London neighborhood.

At the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh in 2008, she played Brunhilde in Nabil Shaban’s The First to Go, a play about the “Disabled Holocaust” in Nazi Germany. She has experience working as a teaching assistant in a special needs school in addition to acting.

On January 26, 2009, Burnell and Alex Winters joined CBeebies’ presentation team as continuity presenters for Discover and Do and The Bedtime Hour. A month after she started co-presenting, the BBC came under fire when parents filed complaints alleging that the one-armed presenter was frightening kids and that this led to difficult conversations about her disability. According to her, the BBC, and numerous disability organizations, the issue was really the prejudices that the parents projected onto the kids. In April 2017, Burnell left CBeebies.

Burnell briefly portrayed Penny Stevenson in the Birmingham-based soap opera Doctors in 2018.
Author
Scholastic Corporation released Burnell’s kid’s book Snowflakes (ISBN 978-1407135045) in September 2013. Burnell’s daughter, who is also mixed-race, served as the inspiration for the story, which is about a city girl who is sent to live with her grandmother in a magical village.
Harper and the Sea of Secrets, another children’s book written by Burnell for World Book Day in 2016, was available at bookstores and grocery stores for £1 or free with a Book Day token starting at the end of February that year. It was written with Key Stage 2 students (ages 7 to 11) in mind. Once more, Scholastic was the publisher of this book.
In 2020, Wide Eyed Editions released I Am Not a Label: 34 Disabled Artists, Thinkers, Athletes, and Activists from the Past and the Present, an illustrated anthology of children’s biographies with illustrations by Lauren Baldo. The 2022 Adrien Prize shortlist included Burnell’s children’s book Wilder Than Midnight, which was published by Puffin.
