Early Life and Childhood

Cerrie Burnell was born Claire Burnell on August 30, 1979, in Petts Wood, London, England. Her age is currently 43 years old (as of 2023). She was born to her dance teacher mother and her telecoms manager father. Likewise, she has a younger brother named John Burnell. At the age of 10, she began requesting the name “Cerrie” instead of her given name, Claire. She was raised in the southeast London suburb of Petts Wood. Although her parents encouraged her to use a prosthetic arm, she resisted from the beginning and stopped using one altogether when she was nine years old. At the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh in 2008, she played Brunhilde in Nabil Shaban’s The First to Go, a play about the “Disabled Holocaust” in Nazi Germany. She has experience working as a teaching assistant in a special needs school in addition to acting.

On January 26, 2009, Burnell and Alex Winters joined CBeebies’ presentation team as continuity presenters for Discover and Do and The Bedtime Hour. A month after she started co-presenting, the BBC came under fire when parents filed complaints alleging that the one-armed presenter was frightening kids and that this led to difficult conversations about her disability.
