Career and Professional Life
When Jackson was only 14, he used to play with his father’s bluegrass band and he was invited to play banjo for Jim and Jesse at a local concert with their group the Virginia Boys.
Carl also played for other groups like the Grand Ole Opry. Since then, Jackson worked with Jim and Jass for five years.
Jackson’s talents earned him a contract with the independent Prize label, where he recorded the album Bluegrass Festival in the late ’60s.
During his journey to test musical waters, Jackson left to play with the Sullivan Family in 1971.
However, after less than a year, he moved to Ohio to form the Country Store with Keith Whitley and Jimmy Gaudreau.
Eventually, Jackson worked with Glen Campbell in his band for twelve years. However, at that time, he also recorded the albums Banjo Player and Old Friend for Capitol.
In the year 1981, he signed with Sugar Hill and released his tribute to Earl Scruggs, Banjo Man. The following year he brought Songs of the South, and in 1983 he joined old friends Jim & Jesse for Banjo Hits.
He signed with Columbia in 1984 and he left Glen Campbell and began to hit the charts. His Lefty Frizzell covers “She’s Gone, Gone, Gone” which reached number 44 in 1984.
However, his next three singles never matched its relative success. He also wrote the hit “(Love Always) Letter to Home.” It peaked in the Top 15 for Campbell in May 1984.
During the late ’80s, his rich harmony vocals brightened recordings by Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, Roger Miller, and many other acts.
He performed a duet of “Gentle On My Mind” alongside Ashley Campbell, daughter of Glen Campbell, and Kimberly Woolen on 26 Jun 2017. They collaborated on Glen Campbell’s last album, Adios.

Further, in the ’90s, he began to get rewards for his several years of work. He earned the International Bluegrass Association’s Song of the Year award in 1990 for his song “Little Mountain Church Home.”

He also won a Best Bluegrass Album Grammy the following year with John Starling & The Nash Ramblers for Spring Training.
Jackson won his first Grammy in 1992 for his duet album with John Starling. Between 1984 and 1985, Jackson charted three singles on the Billboard country music charts.
Consequently, in 2006, Jackson earned the International Bluegrass Music Association Song of the Year Award.
