Early Life

Candis Cayne was born in Maui, Hawaii, in the United States, on August 29, 1971. Currently, she is 52 years old, and according to the astrological chart, she has a birth sign of Virgo. She is a US citizen and her birth name is Brendan McDaniel.

The names of her parents are  Gary McDanniel (father) and Patricia Relles (mother). Both of her parents are teachers who taught at the Haleakala Waldorf School. In addition, she grew up with her twin brother Dylan.

She traveled to New York City in the early 1990s to work as a drag artist and choreographer. Moreover, she was a performer in the outdoor drag festival ‘Wigstock’ as “Candis Cayne” at the gay bar ‘Boy Bar’ in New York.

Education

In terms of her academics, she attended Baldwin High School in Maui and graduated in 1989. Meanwhile, she also received training for a year as a classical dancer in the city of Los Angeles.

Professional Career

Candis Cayne began her acting career in 1995 when she appeared in the documentary film “Wigstock: The Movie” as herself. The same year, she appeared in “Stonewall,” a British-American historical comedy film.

She made her cameo appearances as herself in the 1995 comedy movie “To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar.” She appeared in the films “Always Something Better” (1996) and “Drag Time” (1997), as well as RuPaul’s music video for ‘A Little Bit of Love’ (1997).

Soon after, she was cast in the film “Mob Queen” (1998), where she played the new girl on the docks, ‘Glorice Kalsheim.’

Later, she was cast in the  short film “Charlie” and feature film “In the Closet,” and choreographed the music video for TLC’s song “No Scrubs.” She choreographed the video for the song ‘Milkshake’ in 2003.

Moreover, she returned to acting after a seven-year hiatus and was cast in the short film “My Heart Belongs to Data” (2006), where she played Candis.

Started her television career

Her television career began in 2007 when she appeared in an episode of the American police procedural television series “CSI: NY” as Quentin Conrad. She also had a prominent role in the 2007 film “Starrbooty,” which was written by drag queen RuPaul. Moreover, she portrayed Annaka Manners, a billionaire and the owner of a cosmetics company.

In 2008, she appeared in an episode of the TV series “Sordid Lives: The Series.” The same year. she was also offered a Portuguese movie “Libanesa Loira” where she played the character of Libanesa.

She had a recurring role in the primetime drama series “Dirty Sexy Money” as Carmelita Rainer. Her television career took off after she was cast in the Golden Globe Award-winning series “Nip/Tuck” (2009). She was chosen to play Allison Webb in the television series “Drop Dead Diva”  in 2010.

Returned to acting after a three-year break

After a brief hiatus from acting, she returned three years later to play herself in the film “Making the Boys” (2011). She portrayed Geraldine in the television series “Necessary Roughness” the same year. RuPaul then cast her in the American reality television series “RuPaul’s Drag U” (2011), in which she played herself once more.

She reprised her role as herself in the 2012 American television comedy series “She’s Living for This,” starring Sherry Vine. Moreover, she appeared in a few films, including “Meth Head” (2012) and “Grooms Cake” (2012). RuPaul cast Candis in the reality competition show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” again since they were friends. RuPaul was also a judge on the show, and Candis appeared in four episodes as herself.

Recent works

She starred as Ms. Hudson in the award-winning drama series “Elementary” from 2013 to 2014. Her other appearance in the film was “Crazy Bitches” (2014) and in the documentary series “I Am Cait” (2015-16). Further, she also has worked in the TV series “Heartbeat” (2016) and “The Magicians” (2017).

She appeared in the documentary “Disclosure: Trans Lives on Screen,” which was released in 2020. Additionally, she also hosted the third live-streamed episode of Werq the World.
