Brad Daugherty is an American Former Professional Basketball Player. Brad Daugherty is the former center and 5-time NBA All-Star for the Cleveland Cavaliers who later became an ESPN analyst. He also was the first overall pick of the 1986 NBA Draft.
Early Life and Childhood
Brad Daugherty was born on October 19, 1965, in Black Mountain, North Carolina, USA. He is 57 years old and is under the astrological sign, Libra. He holds American nationality and his full name is Bradley Lee Daugherty. And, his nicknames are “Big Dukie” and “Hooch”.
His father’s name is Roy Daugherty and his mother’s name is Dorothy Daugherty. Sadly, his father passed away due to cancer on February 19, 2009, when he was 57 years old. Regarding Daugherty’s educational background and qualifications, he attended William Mason High School, where he was able to play football until his sophomore year and later tried out for the school play.
Then, he went on to attend Charles D. Owen High School in Black Mountain, North Carolina, where he led the Warhorses to the 1982 state finals. He accepted a scholarship to play at the University of North Carolina under legendary college basketball coach Dean Smith.
Likewise, Brad was one of the greatest big men ever to play at the University of North Carolina. He also entered college as a 16-year-old freshman and was a two-time All-ACC first-team selection, and a first-team All-American in the year 1986.
Moreover, he became the ACC 50th Anniversary men’s basketball team in 2002 and was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.
Career and Professional Life
Brad Daugherty was the first overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 1986 NBA draft. And, Harper, Price, and Daugherty, along with fellow rookie John “Hot Rod” Williams immediately started to pay dividends for Cleveland. All of them were named to the 1986–87 All-Rookie team.
He was able to average nineteen points and ten rebounds per game over eight seasons in the NBA and retired as the Cavalier’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder. He also is the all-time leading scorer record until LeBron James broke the point record. He was able to play in 41 postseason games and lead the Cavaliers as far as the Eastern Conference Finals in the year 1992.
Likewise, he was a five-time All-Star in 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, and 1993. On the occasion of the Cavaliers’ 30th anniversary in 1999–2000, he was a unanimous selection to the All-Time Cleveland Cavalier team.
Unfortunately, his career in the NBA was cut short when he was just 28 years old due to his recurring back troubles. He then never played another game after the 1993–94 season. And, after two consecutive seasons of inactivity, he announced his retirement after the 1995–96 season.

After Retirement
His business interests include car dealerships, waste management, and commercial real estate. He also became a college basketball analyst and a NASCAR broadcaster for NBC. He even was a colour commentator, alongside Michael Reghi, for Cleveland Cavalier’s telecasts for one of the seasons.
He actively participates in many charities such as hosting the Presbyterian Home for Children’s annual golf tournament, which raises money in support of the home, located in Black Mountain. Also, sponsored an annual scholarship to help a child from Presbyterian Home receive a higher education.
Moreover, Brad Daugherty co-owned a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team. He went on to join ESPN’s return to NASCAR racing telecasts in the year 2007. He then became an analyst on the weekly topical show Inside NASCAR on Showtime, and on NASCAR Now, a nightly newscast on the sport.
Likewise, he is part owner of JTG Daugherty Racing as well, which owns the No. 47 Camaro ZL1 1LE driven by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Then, in November 2014, he started as an NBA and college basketball analyst for ESPN. Then, he went on to join Fox Sports Ohio for select Cavaliers telecasts in the 2019–20 season as part of the franchise’s 50th season celebration.
In the year 2020, he was able to become an analyst for NASCAR on NBC from the first Michigan International Speedway race onwards. He even served as a roaming reporter for CBS Sports coverage of the 2021 SRX Series. That same year, Daugherty got the opportunity to represent the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2020 NBA draft Lottery.
