Bong Joon-ho

Bong Joon-ho is a film director, producer, and screenwriter from South Korea. Bong Joon-ho first gained recognition and gained a huge fan following with his directorial debut film, the black comedy Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000).

Bong Joon-ho was born in Daegu, South Korea on September 14, 1969. According to his birthdate, he is 53 years old (as of 2022) under the zodiac sign Virgo. Joon Ho holds Korean nationality while his ethnicity is unknown.

Regarding his family background, Bong Joon-ho was born to Bong Sang Gyun (Father) and Park So-Young (Mother). His mother worked as a full-time housewife while his father was a first-generation industrial designer, professor of art at Yeungnam University, and head of the art department at the National Film Institute.

Moreover, His grandfather, Park Taewon, was a well-known South Korean author. His older, sister Bong Ji-hee teaches fashion styling at Anyang University, and his older brother, Bong Joon-soo teaches English at Seoul National University.

Education

Speaking of his educational background, Bong Joon-ho attended Yonsei University, where he studied sociology and worked in the campus newspaper, drawing cartoons in support of the pro-democracy movement.

He graduated in 1993 after serving two years of compulsory military service. Joon-ho then enrolled at the Korean Academy of Film Arts, where he learned about all aspects of filmmaking.

Talking about his career, After graduating, Bong began to work as a variety of other film directors’ assistants. In the 1997 movie Motel Cactus, directed by Park Ki-Yong, he received credit as an associate director and a screenwriter.

For the action thriller “Phantom the Submarine,” released in 1999, he received scripting credit. His first major motion picture was the 2000 dark comedy “Barking Dogs Never Bite.”

The movie had its world premiere at the San Sebastian International Film Festival and went on to win prizes at the Slamdance and Hong Kong Film Festivals. Memories of Murder, his second film, was released in 2003.

The movie about a real-life serial killer had its world premiere in “San Sebastian” and went on to win three prizes. The ‘Influenza’ and ‘Twentidentity’ parts were directed by Joon-ho.

Then, in 2008, he worked with Michel Gondry and Leos Carax on the triptych film “Tokyo!” Mother, his fourth movie, had its world premiere at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. The protagonist is a devoted mother who fights valiantly to save her crippled child from a murder charge.

The film won three honors at the “Asian Film Awards” and was a critical hit.

The 2011 anthology movie “3.11 A Sense of Home” featured a section that was directed by Joon-ho. The series was developed by 21 directors as a reaction to the earthquake and tsunami that had struck Japan that year.

In 2013, he produced and directed Snowpiercer, an English-language adaptation of Jean-Marc Rochette and Jacques Lob’s science fiction action novel “Le Transperceneige.

“The movie “Okja,” directed by Joon-ho, is about a little girl who risks everything to keep her best friend Okja, a mystical beast, from being taken away by a global corporation, which was released in 2017. At the “Cannes Film Festival” that year, the film competed for the Palme d’Or.

Achievements

Bong Joon-ho has won many awards throughout his career. In 2003, he won the Asian Film Award, Altadis New Director Award, and Best Director Award for the movie Memories of Murder. He earned the Orient Express Award for Best Asian Film in 2006 for the movie The Host.

In 2009, Joon-ho was awarded the SIGNIS Award for the movie Mother. He earned the Best Film and Best Director awards for the movie Snowpiercer in 2013.

Likewise, Joon-ho won the Palme d’Or for the movie Okja in 2017. In the year 2020, he won numerous awards for the movie Parasite. The award includes Grand Prize – Film, Best International Film – Cinema, Best Film, Best Original Screenplay,  White Crane Award, and Hollywood Filmmaker Award.
