Awkwafina

Nora Lum, professionally known as Awkwafina, is an American comedian, internet personality, musician, blogger, and television host. Similarly, Awkwafina’s rap song “My Vag,” which became viral on YouTube in 2012, catapulted her to fame.

Early Life and Childhood

Awkwafina was born on June 2, 1988, in Stony Brook, Long Island. As of the year now, she is 33 years old. She is the daughter of Chinese Americans Wally and Tia, who immigrated to the United States from South Korea to attend SUNY New Paltz. Tia, a painter, died of pulmonary hypertension when Awkwafina was four years old. Following her defeat, Awkwafina started using satire to attempt to alleviate the depression she saw in those around her.

In 2019, she published an article in People magazine,

“I think all the time, what would I have been doing if my mom hadn’t passed? I don’t think I’d be here, because I think that I had to face a certain level of trauma to be so joyously self-deprecating and so free.”

Awkwafina was raised in Forest Hills, Queens, by her father and mother. As a teen, she wished to be on TV on every birthday. Nonetheless, she felt a shortage of role models who looked like her before a 7-year-old Awkwafina saw Margaret Cho on television. Cho, according to Awkwafina, “changed my life. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be doing this.” Lucy Liu was another inspiration; when Liu hosted Saturday Night Live, a young Awkwafina waited outside the studios to see her.

Nora Lum credits her confidence and loyalty to her grandmother, who never met the image of a docile Asian woman. Her grandmother raised her with love and care.

Education

Nora Lum began playing the trumpet in school because it was the loudest instrument available (too many kids wanted the drums). Her playing helped her gain admission to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School (the inspiration for the film and TV show Fame), but she decided with her teachers that she did not seek a future with the instrument. She went on to SUNY Albany after graduation, where she majored in journalism and minored in women’s studies.

Following college, She served as a publicity assistant but was fired after the release of “My Vag.” To make ends meet while seeking an entertainment career, she took on a series of jobs, including working at a vegan bodega. At the time, her father encouraged her to seek more secure employment, such as an air traffic controller or meat inspector. He did, however, embrace Nora Lum’s direction as she ascended the performance ladder.

Awkwafina – Professional Life

Nora Lum a.k.a Awkwafina is an American actress, entertainer, rapper, media personality, author, as well as a television host. In 2012, she gained immense fame after her rap song “My Vag” became famous on YouTube. When she was 16, Nora Lum came up with the name Awkwafina, the name referring to her feelings of awkwardness.

Career in music

She first became interested in rap music when she was a child, and by the age of 13, she was rapping herself. She then started using GarageBand to create her beats. At the age of 19, she wrote “My Vag,” a response to Mickey Avalon’s “My Dick.” She posted a low-budget video of the amusingly trash-talking single to YouTube in 2012.

Following the release of “My Vag,” she released songs such as “NYC Bitche$” and “Giant Margaritas.” Her debut album, Yellow Ranger, was released in 2014. She collaborated with Cho on the film “Green Tea” (2016), which parodied Asian stereotypes. She was also included in the documentary Bad Rap, which accompanied her and three other Asian American rappers. She made her debut through the album, In Fina We Trust,  released in 2018.

About the fact that her acting career has taken off, she has no intentioof abandoningon music. Her songs, though, she believes, could be constrained in their popularity.

Movies

She made her film debut as a sorority sister in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016). Seth Rogen, the film’s actor, saw her viral YouTube video and invited her to audition. In Dude, She played one of a gang of female stoners (2018). Olivia Milch, Dude’s producer, co-wrote Ocean’s 8 and recommended her to join the film’s all-star team.

With 2019’s The Farewell, her star continues to grow. In her first lead role, she played a Chinese American who is conflicted over her family’s decision not to tell her Chinese grandmother of her terminal cancer diagnosis. She has stated that the position spoke to her in part because of her mother’s untimely death. Moreover, she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical, or Comedy for her role in The Farewell in 2020, making her the first Asian American to do so.

TV Shows

She first appeared on MTV’s Girl Code in 2014, and then again the next year on the spinoff Girl Code Live. She presented Saturday Night Live in 2018. She was just the second Asian American woman in history to do so. Comedy Central’s She Is Nora From Queens debuted in 2020. Before its premiere, the film, a semi-autobiographical look at her family and life in New York City, was renewed for a second season.
