Rowbotham stated that if Dameron’s captors did not receive the money they desired, she would be killed.

She asked Pierson for money and promised to contribute some of her own to get Dameron released. When the police interrogated Rowbotham about what she’d told Pierson, she admitted her claim of kidnapping and ransom was false and was charged with extortion.
When authorities asked Rowbotham what she thought had happened to Dameron, she said she didn’t believe Dameron, was truly missing or that her parents had no idea where she was.
Police also received information that Dameron’s mother’s boyfriend claimed he killed her, but they have yet to confirm this story and have not named any suspects in her disappearance. She is considered vulnerable because of her transgender identity and her case is still unsolved.
