He obtained a contract with “Down Beat Records,” which had changed its name to “Swing Time Records,” in 1951, and recorded the hit song “Let Me Hold Your Hand.” He released another popular song the next year called “Kissa Me Baby.”

Following the popularity of these two singles, “Atlantic Records” decided to sign him. In 1953, he released “Mess Around,” which became his first hit with “Atlantic Records.” The next singles he recorded were “It Should’ve Been Me” and “Don’t You Know.”

He released the song “I Got a Woman” in 1954, and it went on to become his first Number One hit. Additionally, it brought him fame across the nation.

This Little Girl of Mine, Drown in My Tears, Lonely Avenue, and Night Time Is the Right Time are just a few of the singles he continued to release.

Aretha Robinson established his own “female singing group” in 1956 under the name “Cookies,” which later changed its name to “The Raelettes.” He released his debut album through “Atlantic Records” in 1957.

The Great Ray Charles, an instrumental album, was also released by him in the same year.


After the 1959 release of his single “What’d I Say,” his career reached its height. He ultimately broke into crossover popular pop music after the song became a big hit. He recorded a version of the country song “Movin’ On” later in the year.

The breakthrough single “Georgia On My Mind” was produced by him as part of his successful concept album “The Genius Hit the Road” in 1960, the same year he made a live album named “Ray Charles in Person”.

He earned a lucrative contract with “ABC-Paramount Records.” He also collaborated with vocalist Margie Hendricks in 1960 to produce “Hit the Road Jack,” one of his most well-known singles.

It was the number-one song on every R&B chart and is now regarded as one of his best pieces.

Three more albums—”The Genius Sings the Blues,” “Soul Meeting,” and “The Genius After Hours”—were released in 1961 after this. He had established himself as a prominent artist by 1962.

Aretha Robinson cut the song “Seven Spanish Angels” in 1984, and it would go on to become his most well-known country single.

He was spotted performing during Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration the following year. Thanks to the “Diet Pepsi” ads, his catchphrase “You Got the Right One, Baby” elevated him to international fame in 1991. He played during Bill Clinton’s inauguration two years later.
