Anthony Lynn is a renowned American football coach and former running back. Anthony Lynn is currently serving as the assistant head coach and running backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL).

Early Life

Anthony Lynn was born in McKinney, Texas, the United States, on December 21, 1968. He is currently 55 years old and has a birth sign of Sagittarius. Moreover, he holds American citizenship and belongs to African-American ethnicity. Additionally, his birth name is Anthony Ray Lynn.

Anthony Lynn – Education

Talking about his academic qualifications, he attended Celina High School. Later, he enrolled at Texas Tech University. He played his college football for his college team Texas Tech Red Raiders (1988–1991).

Moreover, he was an All-Southwest Conference running back in 1990. His senior year was cut short by a knee injury, and he was not picked due to health concerns.

Professional Career

Anthony Lynn served as a reserve running back and special teams player for the Denver Broncos (1993, 1997-1999) and the San Francisco 49ers (1995-1996) in the NFL. He retired in 2000 after many neck stinger injuries. Moreover, he was a member of the 1997 and 1998 Denver Broncos Super Bowl championship teams.

Coaching Career

Jacksonville Jaguars

After retiring from his playing career, he served as the running backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-2004). After the team head coach Jack Del Rio shook up a coaching staff, Lynn became a special teams coach.

Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns

After leaving Jacksonville, he quickly became the running backs coach for the Dallas Cowboys. Lynn joined the Cleveland Browns as their running backs coach on January 26, 2007, following Bill Parcells’ retirement as Dallas’ head coach.

New York Jets

He was hired as the New York Jets’ assistant head coach/running backs coach on February 1, 2012, by head coach Rex Ryan, and was later interviewed for the head coach position in January 2015, when Ryan left.

From 2009 to 2013, Lynn coached the Jets’ running backs, and the team averaged 137.0 yards per game, which led the NFL. He helped Chris Ivory record a team-high 833 yards on 182 carries in 2013.

Buffalo Bills

Later, he became the running back coach for the Buffalo Bills. During the 2015-2016 season, the Bills boasted the NFL’s best rushing attack. On September 16, 2016, Lynn was elevated as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator of the Bills when Greg Roman was fired.

He made his offensive coordinator debut against the Arizona Cardinals, leading to a 33-18 victory. Moreover, he took over as interim head coach on December 27, 2016, after Rex Ryan was fired.

Los Angeles Chargers

On January 12, 2017, he was appointed to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, the same day that owner Dean Spanos revealed that the Chargers would relocate from San Diego to Los Angeles.

He guided the Chargers to a 12-4 record in his second season as head coach, earning the team’s first postseason trip since 2013. On January 4, 2021, the Chargers fired Lynn. He concluded his Chargers career with a 33-31 (.516) regular season record and a 1-1 postseason record.

Detroit Lions

He was then hired by the Detroit Lions as their offensive coordinator on the 23rd of January 2021. Moreover, the head coach of the Lions announced on 10 January 2022 that the organization and Lynn were parting ways.

San Francisco 49ers

Meanwhile, he was hired as assistant head coach by the San Francisco 49ers on the 4th of February 2022. When Bobby Turner stepped down due to health reasons, he took on the additional role of running backs coach.

Following the 49ers’ loss in the 2023 NFC Championship Game, the Washington Commanders were granted permission to interview Lynn for the offensive coordinator position in February 2023.

Lynn was involved in a car accident on August 20, 2005, that left him with two collapsed lungs, face and shoulder injuries, and temporary lower-body paralysis. He underwent four operations on his face, knee, and shoulder. However, he returned to his regular job less than two weeks following the accident.
