Anthony Hopkins is a multi-talented actor, director, and producer from Wales. Anthony Hopkins is best recognized for his role as Hannibal Lecter in Jonathan Demme’s thriller/horror film “The Silence of the Lambs.”

Early Life

He was born Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins, professionally known as Anthony Hopkins was born on the 31st of December 1937, in Port Talbot, Glamorgan, Wales. He holds a Walsh nationality and is agnostic (a person who doesn’t believe in god). Currently, he is 85 years old and has a birth sign of Capricorn. Meanwhile, he has White-Welsh ethnicity.

He was born to his father Richard Arthur Hopkins and his mother Muriel Anne. Professionally, his father was a baker. Anthony grew up very close to his grandfather. Moreover, he struggled with dyslexia. He enjoyed painting and playing the piano, but he was uninterested in academics.

Regarding his academic qualification, he was sent to West Monmouth Boys School but he left the school after some months and continued his education at Cowbridge Grammar School.

Afterwards, he enrolled at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff where he graduated in 1957. Moreover, he enrolled at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

After completing his graduation, Anthony Hopkins made his debut with a play in 1960 titled “Have a Cigarette.” After that, he was recognized by Sir Laurence Olivier who took him as an understudy at the Royal National Theatre in 1965. During his time in the theatre, he had amazing days and later he got a chance to act in the 1967 play, “A Flea in Her Ear.”

However, he made his big screen debut after a year, playing the role of Richard the Lionheart in “The Lion in Winter” (1968). Additionally, the movie was a huge hit. After this, he started getting many movie offers. In the year 1969, he was featured in three movies named “The Looking Glass War,” “Hamlet,” and “Department S.”

From 1972 to 1973, he made his appearance in the television drama series, “War and Peace.” In the late 1970s, he appeared in several films, some notable are “Audrey Rose” (1978) and “Magic” (1979). Similarly, he appeared in several movies in the 1980s, playing award-winning roles in “The Bunker” (1981), “Mussolini and I” (1985), and “84 Charing Cross Road” (1987).

However, his breakthrough role came b 1991, playing the role of the cannibalistic serial killer Hannibal Lecter in Jonathan Demme’s “The Silence of the Lambs.” His role in the movie was praised by the audience and film critics and also able to earn several awards.

In the 1993 film “The Remains of the Day,” this actor played James Stevens. The film received positive reviews and several Academy Award nominations. He portrayed US President Richard Nixon in the biographical film “Nixon” in 1995.

The film was nominated for several prestigious awards. In the 1990s, he appeared in several critically acclaimed films, including “Amistad” (1997), “The Mask of Zorro” (1998), and “Meet Joe Black” (1998).

Hopkins starred in the biographical film “The World’s Fastest Indian” in 2005. In 2008, he made an appearance in “The Wolfman.” In 2011, he starred in “Thor” and its sequels, “Thor: The Dark World” (2013) and “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017).

Later, he appeared in the 2019 biographical film, “The Two Popes” and won an Academy Award nomination for his role. In 2020, he starred in the movie named “The Father” and was nominated for Academy Awards for his role. And also became the oldest Best Actor nominee for Academy Awards. In the year 2021, he starred in several films and TV series such as “The Virtuoso,” “Where Are You,” “Zero Contact,” and “Mythic Quest.”

Throughout his professional career, he has earned several awards and nominations. He was appointed a CBE in 1987 and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for “services to the arts” at Buckingham Palace in 1993.

Moreover, he was awarded an honorary D.Litt. degree in 1988 and in 1992 received an honorary fellowship from the University of Wales, Lampeter. Additionally, he has also been honored with various lifetime achievement awards for his work in film and television.

Gwyneth Paltrow presented him with the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2006. In 2008, Richard Attenborough presented Hopkins with the British Academy of Film and Television Arts BAFTA Fellowship for lifetime achievement. Similarly, in 2003, he was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hopkins won the Oscar for Best Actor for The Father in 2021.
