In May 2023, Luna joined Marjorie Taylor Greene in supporting resolutions calling for the removal of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew M. Graves, FBI Director Christopher Wray, Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and Attorney General Merrick Garland. Adam Schiff was to be expelled from Congress and fined $16 million, according to a resolution that Luna sponsored in May 2023.

Political Positions

2020 Presidential Election

In June 2022, Anna Paulina Luna stated regarding the 2020 US presidential election, “I believe that President Trump won that election, and I do believe that voter fraud occurred.” She went to a red carpet event and a screening of the movie 2000 Mules the month before, which asserts to have proof of widespread election fraud in 2020.

Abortion

Luna has declared herself a “pro-life extremist” and stated her support for laws restricting abortion. Her anti-abortion stance, according to her, was inspired by her college experience when she dissected a chicken egg and observed how the chick reacted to a scalpel blade: “God was using that opportunity to wake me up.”

Economy

In an interview from August 2022, Luna stated that she would be in favor of a ban on American oil exports to increase the domestic oil supply. She claimed that the US has one of the largest supplies of environmentally friendly oil in the entire world. We don’t need to travel to countries like Saudi Arabia or even Venezuela to obtain those oil sources.

Furthermore, she added, “If it means not selling to other countries so that here in the United States, we can lower the gas prices, that’s what I agree with.” She claimed that this viewpoint was part of the “America First” movement. Due to its significance in her district, Luna has stated that tourism is one of her top priorities.

Twitter

In October 2020, Luna’s campaign announced that it had filed a complaint with the FEC regarding Twitter’s refusal to verify Luna’s account. In September 2020, Luna threatened to sue Twitter because the company refused to verify her account, claiming “political prejudice” and calling it “election meddling.” By verifying Charlie Crist’s account but not Luna’s, Twitter allegedly broke the equal time rule, according to the FEC complaint, which urged the agency to compel Twitter to validate Luna’s account.

Additionally, Luna claimed that Twitter, the federal government, “leftist nonprofits,” and possibly the Democratic National Committee had collaborated to censor Americans in November 2020 through the Jira project management platform, in violation of the First Amendment, during a tense House of Representatives Oversight Committee hearing on February 8, 2023.

Foreign Policy

Luna is a cosponsor of H.Res.113, the Ukraine Fatigue Resolution, introduced by Florida Representative Matt Gaetz. The bill would demand that all parties to the conflict immediately reach a peace agreement and suspend all foreign assistance for the War in Ukraine.

Disputed Biographical Claims

Religious and Ethnic Background

Luna has asserted that she is “a small fraction Ashkenazi” and that her father raised her as a Messianic Jew, a branch of the Protestant Christian movement for Jews. However, according to her extended family, her father was a Catholic and they were unaware of him practicing any form of Judaism when Luna was a child.

Luna’s father, according to her mother, was a “Christian that embraced the Messianic faith” after quitting drugs. When Heinrich Mayerhofer immigrated to Canada in 1954, he declared himself to be a Catholic.

Mexican Heritage

Luna stated that her “entire mother’s side of the family and father’s side of the family on both sides are from Mexico” in a PragerU documentary in 2020. However, her paternal grandfather was German.

Difficult Childhood

According to Luna, she was raised by her mother on government assistance and “grew up in the welfare system” because she had “no family to rely on”. She has stated that she was raised in a “broken home mentality” and that she discovered her drug-addicted father’s meth bag when she was 10 years old.

She claimed that heroin use caused her grandmother’s death from AIDS. Luna has stated that she attended “over six high schools” before graduating and that she and her mother lacked “a strong extended network of people” who could help take care of them.

These allegations have been refuted by Luna, who claims she “barely spent any time with them in her entire life.” Luna’s mother claimed that she was the only real financial support for the family and that she had to rely on welfare for a while, particularly while she was paying for her college education at the University of California, Irvine, and later at the UCLA School of Law.

Moreover, Anna Paulina Luna stated in an article from August 2014 that she planned to complete her goal of visiting 20 nations by the time she turned 25 in December of that same year.

Father’s Incarceration

According to Luna’s biography on the campaign website, her father “spent time in and out of prison” when she was a child and teenager, and she kept in touch with him “through letters to jail and collect calls.”

Luna’s mother and aunt claimed that he spent several brief periods in jail for failing to make child support payments. Additionally, according to Luna’s mother, he was incarcerated for a drug-related offense for at least a year.

Luna’s father was in custody around the time of two court appearances, according to a dismissed misdemeanor drug possession case, but the case information did not specify the duration of his detention, and court proceedings only lasted for about three months.

Harassed by 2021 primary opponent

Following a recording of William Braddock threatening to make Luna “disappear” and saying he had “access to a hit squad, too, Ukrainians and Russians,” a friend of Luna’s was able to obtain a temporary stalking injunction against Braddock in June 2021. Following the judge’s approval of the temporary injunction, Braddock withdrew from the race. Because there was only one instance of harassment when the law required two, the judge denied the request for a permanent injunction.
