Allen started his broadcasting career at the age of 15 when he did on-air work for his high school radio station in Coventry, Rhode Island. When he was 16, he started announcing auto racing, when he called the action at Seekonk Speedway.

In the year 1986, Allen joined Motor racing Network as a race reporter and he became co-lead announcer with Barney Hall and Joe Moore. Later in 2014, he replaced Reid and earned the position of lead announcer for ESPN’s broadcasts of IndyCar races for ABC. On 28th April 2017, he confirmed that ESPN was releasing him after the 2017 IndyCar doubleheader Detroit Grand Prix. However, in 2018, ESPN reported that they would be bringing Bestwick back to get the Indy 500.
